Why the dates start on 15 January
From mid-December to Makar Sankranti, the sun is in Sagittarius and the calendar is in Kharmas, when most North Indian families do not hold weddings. Drik Panchang marks 1 to 14 January 2027 as a prohibited solar month for marriage. Makar Sankranti falls on 15 January 2027, the same day as Thai Pongal in Tamil Nadu, and the sun’s move into Capricorn reopens the season that very day. That is why the first date of the year is 15 January. Our guide to Kharmas explains the pause.
Dates to look at closely
- Friday 15 January has a day window, 7:15 am to 2:13 pm, under Revati, and falls on Makar Sankranti itself, which many families consider especially auspicious. It also falls on a festival day, so relatives may have their own celebrations.
- Monday 18 January has a window of only seven minutes, 9:05 pm to 9:12 pm. It is a valid muhurat, but the ceremony has to be timed to it exactly.
- 19 and 20 January run together from Tuesday morning to Wednesday afternoon under Rohini and Mrigashira.
- Sunday 24 January has a long window, 10:20 am to 9:29 pm, under Magha, and is the most flexible weekend date of the month.
- 26 and 27 January run from Tuesday evening through Wednesday night. 26 January is Republic Day, a national holiday, which helps guests travel.
- 30 and 31 January run from the early hours of Saturday 30 January to Sunday evening, under Anuradha, giving a strong weekend at the end of the month.
Winter weather and travel in January
January is the coldest month in North India. Nights in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh fall close to freezing, and dense fog frequently delays flights and trains across the north, especially in the mornings. For guests travelling to a North Indian wedding, build in a buffer day and avoid tight connections. Outdoor evening events need heaters and a covered back-up.
The south and west are comfortable: Goa, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have pleasant, dry weather in January, and Rajasthan has warm days and cold nights that suit evening events with bonfires. Our winter wedding ideas cover how to make the cold part of the design, and our Goa wedding cost guide covers a popular January destination.
Guests and rooms in January
Hotel rates fall from their Christmas and New Year peak in the first week of January, which is good news for a mid-January wedding. But the reopening of the wedding season means that city hotels near popular banquet venues fill quickly on wedding weekends. Block rooms by November, hold them until a cut-off date, and build in an extra night for guests who may be delayed by fog. Our outstation guest planning guide covers room blocks and transport.
Demand and pricing
After a month without weddings, the reopening in mid-January brings a rush, and the January weekends, particularly 24 and 30 to 31 January, are heavily booked. Venues and vendors who missed out over Kharmas price the new season accordingly. If you can use the weekday dates of 19 to 20 or 26 to 27 January, you will usually have more choice.
Festivals around the January dates
Makar Sankranti, Lohri, Pongal and Uttarayan all fall in mid-January, and many families have their own observances and travel plans around them. Republic Day on 26 January is a public holiday. For families from Gujarat, the kite festival of Uttarayan, around 14 to 15 January, is a major event, and some families prefer not to hold a wedding on the same days.
Morning, evening or night?
January’s windows offer all three. A morning ceremony on 15 or 20 January suits families who want the wedding in daylight and the cold kept to a minimum, with a lunch reception. The long window on Sunday 24 January allows an afternoon ceremony and an evening reception. The night windows of 19 into 20 and 26 into 27 January suit traditional night pheras, with heaters and hot food. Choosing the time of day early helps the decorator plan lighting and heating.
For NRI families
January works well for NRI families who could not travel in December, and the end of the Christmas rush brings better airfares and hotel rates from early January. Fog in the north is the main risk, so allow an extra day for arrivals. Our guide to timing an NRI wedding covers this in more detail.
A countdown for a January 2027 wedding
| When | What to lock in |
|---|---|
| October to November 2026 | Pandit, muhurat, venue and caterer |
| November 2026 | Decor, photography, music; guest rooms |
| December 2026 | Invitations; outfits; travel plans with a fog buffer |
| Early January 2027 | Final guest count; heaters and covered spaces confirmed |
| Wedding week | Pre-wedding events and the ceremony |
Because much of the planning falls over the Christmas and New Year holidays, when vendors are busy with other events and families are travelling, decisions made in November save a great deal of stress in December.
Marrying on Makar Sankranti
A wedding on 15 January 2027 carries the symbolism of the sun’s turn northward, Uttarayan, which is widely regarded as the beginning of an auspicious half of the year. It also means relatives will be celebrating the festival, flying kites in Gujarat, lighting bonfires for Lohri in Punjab, and cooking Pongal in Tamil Nadu. Some families fold the festival into the wedding, with kites, sesame sweets and a bonfire at the sangeet; others prefer a date a week later so that the festival and the wedding do not compete.
Regional calendars differ
This list follows the North Indian calendar for New Delhi. In Tamil Nadu, the month of Thai, which begins at Pongal, is traditionally a favoured month for weddings, but the muhurtham dates come from the Tamil panchangam; Telugu, Kannada and Bengali families follow their own calendars. Our muhurtham guide explains the South Indian approach.
Before you fix a January date
- Confirm the exact time with the pandit, especially for the seven-minute window on 18 January.
- Add a buffer day for guests flying into North India, because of fog.
- Plan heaters and covered space for evening events in the north.
- Check whether the families have festival commitments around 14 to 15 January.
