Same-Sex Wedding Planner

Premium planning with cultural depth. We invest time in your specific community customs, not just the aesthetic.

Velvet Knot plans premium LGBTQ+ weddings in India and abroad for gay, lesbian and queer couples: commitment ceremonies with the rituals you choose, destination celebrations, and legal marriages in countries that allow them. Every venue we book has confirmed in writing that it will host your wedding exactly as it hosts any couple, and everyone working on your wedding for Velvet Knot is briefed and bound by your privacy terms.

A same-sex or queer wedding in India deserves the same scale, craft and care as any wedding we plan. It also needs a few things most planners never think about: an officiant who is genuinely comfortable, a venue whose staff have been briefed, a team that will not quietly back out, and privacy that is written down rather than hoped for. That is the work we do.

We plan for couples living in India and for NRI and international couples coming home to celebrate, from intimate ceremonies for thirty guests to multi-day weddings at palaces and resorts.

Whether your families are fully with you, still finding their way, or not part of the day at all, the wedding is planned around the people who will actually be there. You decide how traditional it is, how large it is and how visible it is, and we make each of those choices work in practice, from the first shortlist to the last send-off.

What we plan

FormatWhat it includes
Commitment ceremony in IndiaA full wedding with the rituals you choose, adapted for two grooms, two brides or a queer couple, with haldi, mehendi, sangeet and reception
Destination celebrationA palace, resort or villa taken exclusively, with guest travel, stays and a closed guest list
Legal marriage abroadPlanning around registration in a country that recognises same-sex marriage, such as Thailand, New York or New Zealand
BothA small legal ceremony abroad and the larger celebration in India, on one timeline and one budget

How we work

  1. Consultation. We start with the two of you: the wedding you want, your families, and how public the day should be.
  2. Shape and privacy. We agree the format, the guest ceiling and one of four privacy levels, from open to closed, before any booking.
  3. Officiant first. We find a priest or celebrant who will lead your ceremony the way you want it, confirmed in writing.
  4. Vetted venues. We book only venues that have told us in writing that they will host your wedding exactly as they host any couple.
  5. One team, one standard. Decor, photography, catering, styling and entertainment are delivered by the Velvet Knot team, all briefed on your names, pronouns and privacy level, and venue contracts carry equal service and privacy terms.
  6. Family and guests. We brief parents and point people, and handle difficult conversations so you do not have to.
  7. The day itself. Our team runs the day, briefs every member of staff and keeps anything difficult away from you.

Our commitments to you

  • You will never be asked who is the bride and who is the groom.
  • No venue will learn about your wedding from us before agreeing, in writing, to host it.
  • No photograph, name or detail of your wedding will appear in our marketing without your written consent.
  • Your wedding is priced like any wedding of the same size and format.
  • We are honest about the law. A ceremony in India is not a registered marriage, and we plan the legal side with that in mind.

Where we plan

We plan LGBTQ+ weddings across India, including Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Goa, Rajasthan and Kerala, and we coordinate celebrations for couples marrying abroad. For couples who want complete control of who is on site, we recommend properties that can be taken exclusively; our destination weddings page covers the options.

Who we plan for

Our couples are as varied as the weddings they want. What they share is a wish for a celebration planned with the same seriousness as any other Indian wedding, by people who do not need anything explained twice.

  • Couples living in India who want a full wedding with their families, in their home city or at a destination.
  • NRI and diaspora couples coming home to celebrate, often after a legal ceremony in the country where they live, and planning most of the wedding from abroad.
  • Couples where one partner is not Indian, who want an Indian celebration that makes sense to both families.
  • Trans and non-binary partners, whose names, pronouns and preferences are written into every brief and contract from the first day.
  • Couples who married quietly years ago and now want the celebration they could not have then, sometimes with a renewal of vows.
  • Interfaith and inter-community couples, whose ceremony draws on two traditions at once.

What a planning engagement covers

A wedding with us is planned end to end, in the same stages as any large Indian wedding, with the extra care this kind of wedding needs built into each one.

Wedding formats we plan

Most couples fall into one of three shapes. Each can be scaled up or down, and the right one depends on your families, your privacy level and whether a legal ceremony abroad is part of the plan.

FormatTypical guestsTypical lengthVenues that suit it
Intimate celebration30 to 80One or two daysA private villa, a boutique heritage hotel or a farmhouse
Full Indian wedding150 to 400Three days, with haldi, mehendi, sangeet, ceremony and receptionA palace or resort taken exclusively, or a city hotel for the reception
Two-country weddingA handful abroad, then the full guest list at homeA short legal ceremony abroad, then a celebration in India weeks or months laterA destination abroad for the legal step and any of the above in India

Guest numbers drive the budget more than anything else, exactly as they do for any wedding, and our guide to wedding cost by guest count shows how each band adds up. For smaller weddings, our intimate wedding planning page covers the formats in more detail.

Destinations that work especially well

For an LGBTQ+ wedding the most valuable feature of a venue is control: over who is on site, who serves your guests and who can take photographs. That is why we often recommend properties that can be taken over completely.

DestinationWhy couples choose itBest for
Rajasthan palaces and fortsHeritage properties that can be booked exclusively, with space for every functionFull Indian weddings with a large guest list

Our guides to palace venues in Rajasthan, Alleppey and Thailand cover the practical side of each destination.

Your first consultation

The first conversation is about the two of you, not a sales script. It usually takes about thirty minutes, by video or in person in Hyderabad, and it covers:

  • the wedding you imagine, and any rituals or traditions that matter to you or your families;
  • where your families are, and how involved you would like them to be;
  • how public the wedding should be, from fully open to fully private;
  • whether a legal ceremony abroad is part of the plan, and roughly when;
  • a guest range, the number of functions and the season you have in mind.

Afterwards you receive a written outline of the wedding we would plan, the timeline it needs, and the next decisions to make. Nothing you share is passed to any venue until you have agreed, and until that venue has confirmed in writing that it will host your wedding.

From first call to wedding day

WhenWhat happens
12 months or more beforeConsultation, format and privacy level agreed, and the season chosen
9 to 12 monthsOfficiant confirmed, venue shortlisted, visited and booked
6 to 9 monthsPhotography, decor, catering and styling booked, each with the written terms described above
4 to 6 monthsGuest travel and stays planned, and any documents for a ceremony abroad under way
3 monthsInvitations sent with the ceremony description and photography policy
1 monthRunning order final, family and point people briefed, staff briefing scheduled
The week of the weddingOur team on site, venue staff briefed in person, every function run to plan

Shorter timelines are possible for intimate weddings. For a large wedding in peak season, start as early as you can, because the best exclusive venues book first.

Why couples choose us

Planning an LGBTQ+ wedding in India well is less about grand gestures than about getting dozens of small things right: the manager who has briefed the banquet team, the photographer who has agreed not to post, the officiant who says the right words, the relative who is gently looked after. We treat each of those as part of the plan, not as an afterthought. And we are straightforward about the law, so your celebration and your legal arrangements work together rather than against each other.

After the wedding

Our work does not stop when the last guest leaves. The weeks after a wedding carry their own small tasks, and for LGBTQ+ couples a few of them matter more than usual.

After the dayWhat we take care of
Photographs and filmDelivery through a private gallery, with sharing controlled by the two of you and nothing released without your consent
Close-outFinal accounts reconciled, venue deposits returned and the venue’s privacy obligation confirmed in writing
GuestsThank-you notes, return travel for outstation guests and anything left behind at the venue
Your legal checklistA reminder of the documents you planned with your lawyer, such as nominations, wills and any registration abroad, so nothing is left undone once the celebrations end
What comes nextA first anniversary dinner, a second celebration in another city, or a party for friends who could not travel

Many couples come back to us for these later celebrations, and the team who served them the first time already knows them.

Cultural Heritage

Understanding the Traditions

Love between people of the same sex has a long presence in Indian art, poetry and scripture, and since the Supreme Court's 2018 judgment in Navtej Singh Johar, same-sex relationships between adults are lawful in India. Marriage has not yet followed: in 2023 the Supreme Court held that recognising same-sex marriage is a matter for Parliament, and in January 2025 it dismissed the review petitions.

Couples are not waiting. Across India, same-sex and queer couples hold full weddings with their families: a haldi and mehendi, a sangeet, a ceremony with the rituals they choose, and a reception. Many also register a legal marriage abroad. We plan both, and we are honest with couples about what each one does and does not do in law.

Ceremonial Detail

Key Rituals & Ceremonies

Most Indian wedding rituals adapt naturally for two grooms, two brides or a queer couple. A shared haldi and mehendi for both partners. A sangeet with performances from both families. A varmala exchange. The seven steps around the fire, with the partners taking turns to lead or walking side by side. Rings, a sacred thread or an exchange of family heirlooms in place of rituals that assign a role by gender.

Couples who prefer a non-religious ceremony choose a celebrant-led format with personal vows, a lamp lit together, handfasting or a blessing circle. We help you choose, and we find an officiant who will lead the ceremony exactly as you want it.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you plan same-sex weddings in India?

Yes. We plan weddings for gay, lesbian and queer couples in India and abroad, from intimate commitment ceremonies to multi-day celebrations at palaces and resorts, with every venue confirmed in writing before we book it.

Is a same-sex wedding in India legally recognised?

No. A same-sex wedding celebration is lawful, but the Supreme Court declined to recognise same-sex marriage in 2023 and dismissed the review petitions in January 2025, so the marriage cannot be registered in India. Couples who want legal status marry abroad.

Can you plan a legal marriage abroad as well?

Yes. We plan the celebration around a legal ceremony in a country that recognises same-sex marriage, such as Thailand, New York or New Zealand, and put both on one timeline and one budget.

How do you make sure everyone will treat us well?

Every venue confirms in writing, before we book it, that it will host your wedding exactly as it hosts any couple, with equal service and privacy terms in the contract. Everyone working on your wedding for Velvet Knot is briefed on your names, pronouns and privacy level.

Can our wedding be kept private?

Yes. We agree a privacy level with you, from open to fully closed, and deliver it through exclusive venues, guest list control, staff briefings and privacy clauses that bar anyone working on the wedding from sharing images or details.

Does a same-sex wedding cost more with Velvet Knot?

No. Your wedding is priced like any wedding of the same size, format and city.
