Alleppey is the Kerala market that actually scales

Alappuzha, which the directories and most visitors still call Alleppey, sits on the coast of central Kerala where the backwaters meet the Arabian Sea. It is a district town rather than a resort enclave, which is exactly why it works for weddings: it has road access, a railway station in the town, real hotel inventory, and a cluster of backwater resorts built for groups.

Compare that to Munnar, four hours up a Ghat road with a 250-guest ceiling, or Kumarakom across the lake with a much smaller property count. Alleppey is the Kerala destination you choose when the guest list is 200 or 300 and you still want water, houseboats and coconut palms in the photographs. What an Alleppey wedding costs in 2026

Directory listings read in September 2026: Vasundhara Sarovar Premiere at about Rs 1,500 a plate for 20 to 250 guests, Uday Backwater Resort at about Rs 1,350 for 150 to 600 with a listed rental near Rs 1.42 lakh, and Mandap listing district resorts at roughly Rs 850 to Rs 950, Rs 1,150 and Rs 1,650 across three properties. One WedMeGood entry for the district goes to Rs 2,000. At the bottom of the market, Justdial lists banquet halls at Rs 300 to Rs 700 a plate with wedding packages from about Rs 1 lakh.

A Kerala event company puts backwater venue day-use at Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 3 lakh with catering from Rs 400 to Rs 2,500 a plate, and a wedding publication brackets the whole market from Rs 75,000 for a convention centre to Rs 15 lakh for a premium backwater resort buyout. Those are venue-and-food numbers, not totals.

The convention centre tier is worth taking seriously rather than dismissing. A large section of Alleppey’s local weddings happen there, and for a family whose guests are mostly local and whose priority is feeding 500 people well, it is the right product. The backwater resort tier is what a destination brief usually means.

The venues

Vasundhara Sarovar Premiere

Vayalar, on the backwaters, listed at about Rs 1,500 a plate for 20 to 250 guests. One of the most complete wedding products in the district, with the lawn, the water frontage and the room block in one place.

Uday Backwater Resort

About Rs 1,350 a plate with a stated range up to 600 guests and rental near Rs 1.42 lakh. The capacity headroom is the reason to look here: very few Kerala backwater properties genuinely take 500-plus.

Punnamada Resort and Lake Palace

Both on Punnamada Lake, both frequently asked about, both premium. Punnamada in particular sits on the finish line of the snake boat race, which is a spectacular setting and, once a year, an impossible one. See the section below.

Haveli Backwater Resorts and Contour Backwaters

Mid-tier backwater properties that handle a two-day wedding comfortably at 150 to 250 guests. Solid rather than distinctive, and priced accordingly.

Houseboats

Alleppey’s signature, and worth being precise about. A kettuvallam houseboat holds a handful of people, not a wedding. What houseboats are genuinely good for is the couple’s arrival, a small ceremony for immediate family, a photography sequence, or a guest experience on the day between functions. Booking twelve houseboats to move 200 guests is possible and is expensive and slow, and it is almost never the right call. Use one or two well.

The one date to check before anything else

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race, the snake boat race held on Punnamada Lake, is the largest event in Alleppey’s calendar and one of the largest in Kerala. It draws very large crowds, and in the days around it the town’s hotel and resort inventory is effectively fully committed, road access around the lake is restricted, and rates go up sharply.

If your wedding date lands on that weekend, you will discover it when you try to block rooms and find there are none. Check the current year’s race date with Kerala Tourism before you fix anything, because it is set annually and has moved between August and later in the year. This single check has saved more Alleppey weddings than any venue negotiation.

Season

• November to February. The wedding season and the tourist season together. Warm days, low humidity by Kerala standards, minimal rain. Highest rates and the tightest availability, so book nine to twelve months out.
• March to May. Hot and humid. Genuinely uncomfortable for a midday outdoor function, though evenings on the water are pleasant. Rates soften.
• June to September. Southwest monsoon. Heavy rain, and Alleppey is low-lying, so localised flooding is a real consideration. Rates are lowest and the greenery is at its best, but any outdoor plan needs a full covered alternative.
• October and November. Northeast monsoon tapering into the good season. The first half of November is often the sweet spot for value against weather.

Alleppey’s humidity is the practical constraint that Munnar does not have. Floral decor wilts faster, guests in heavy silk suffer, and outdoor makeup and hair need a plan. Schedule main functions for the evening and keep daytime events under cover or on the water where the breeze does the work. Logistics, which are the easiest in Kerala

Cochin International Airport is about 85 km, roughly two hours. Trivandrum is about 150 km. Alappuzha railway station is in the town itself on the coastal line, which is unusual for a destination market and genuinely valuable: guests from Chennai, Bangalore and across Kerala can arrive by train without a road transfer.

That accessibility is the strongest single argument for Alleppey over the rest of Kerala’s destination options. Guest attendance holds up better when the journey is two hours from an international airport rather than four hours up a Ghat road, and attendance is what actually determines whether a destination wedding feels full.

Houseboat rules, and the sunset ceremony that usually cannot happen

The most common Alleppey request we get is a ceremony or a couple’s sequence on a houseboat at sunset, drifting through the backwaters. It is worth understanding the rules before you build a running order around it.

Houseboats on the Kerala backwaters are licensed vessels operating under maritime and tourism regulation, and cruising is restricted to daylight hours. Boats are required to anchor for the night rather than navigate after dark, for the straightforward reason that the channels are narrow, unlit and shared with local fishing traffic. In practice that means a boat can be moving during golden hour and must be moored well before your evening reception starts.

This is not a reason to drop the houseboat. It is a reason to schedule it correctly: a late-afternoon cruise that returns to a moored position, with the ceremony on the resort’s water frontage rather than on the water itself, gets you the same photographs and none of the risk. Capacity is the other constraint, since a kettuvallam carries a small group rather than a wedding party. Confirm the licensed passenger capacity, not the advertised one, and confirm the operator’s current permit status. Both vary and both are your planner’s job to check rather than yours to assume.

Where Alleppey budgets go wrong

The houseboat line. Covered above. Couples routinely budget for a houseboat fleet and then discover the cost and the timing do not work. Budget one or two, used deliberately.

Not costing humidity management. Cooling, covered walkways, backup power, and floral choices that survive the day. In a November wedding this is manageable. In April it is a significant line.

Assuming Kerala means cheap. Alleppey’s floor is low, but a premium backwater resort buyout at 250 guests reaches Rs 40 lakh comfortably, which is Kochi territory. Note the transport line is smaller here than in every other market in this batch. That is the airport proximity and the in-town railway station doing real work, and it is worth roughly Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh against a hill destination of the same size.

Who Alleppey is right for

It is right for a guest list of 150 to 350 that wants water and Kerala without a four-hour transfer. It is right for families spread across Kerala, Tamil Nadu and the Gulf, because Kochi is an easy arrival. It is right in November to February, and workable with planning outside that.

It is wrong if humidity is a dealbreaker, wrong in peak monsoon without a full indoor plan, and wrong if you want hills. For those, Munnar, Ooty or the hill station shortlist are the alternatives, and Goa is the other coastal option worth pricing against it.
