Phuket is the easiest Thai island for a large Indian wedding: direct flights from five Indian cities, and resorts that publish ballrooms seating 300 to 350 at round tables. The JW Marriott at Mai Khao and the Phuket Marriott at Merlin Beach chart the biggest seated rooms among the resorts we checked. Plan the main events for November to April, when the Andaman coast is dry.
Most Indian couples who shortlist Thailand start with Phuket, and for good reason. It is the Thai destination with the most direct flights from India, the deepest stock of large resorts and the most experience of Indian functions. What families rarely know before they start is how much the resorts differ in what they can actually seat, which decides the shortlist faster than any brochure. This guide covers getting there, the weather, the resorts with their published event space, and how to match a venue to your guest list.
For budget ranges across Thailand, see our Thailand wedding cost guide. This page focuses on what is specific to Phuket.
Why Phuket works for Indian weddings
- Direct flights. IndiGo flies to Phuket from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru, Air India flies from Delhi, and Air India Express serves Phuket from Hyderabad and, since June 2026, Bengaluru. Most guests can arrive without changing planes.
- Big rooms on a beach. Several resorts publish ballrooms for 300 or more seated, so a full sangeet and reception can stay on one property.
- Room stock. The larger resorts have 200 to 400 guest rooms, enough to keep most of a mid-size guest list together.
- Short transfers. The airport is in the north of the island, close to the Mai Khao, Nai Yang and Layan beaches.
Getting there
| From | How | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad | Direct flights to Phuket International Airport | Block seats early for November to February dates |
| Other Indian cities | Via Bangkok, then a domestic flight of about an hour and a half | Build in a connection buffer for elderly guests |
| Airport to resorts | Road transfer | Northern beaches are closest; Kata, Karon and Cape Panwa take longer |
From 15 September 2026, Indian passport holders can stay up to 30 days visa-free for tourism, and every visitor must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online in the three days before arrival. Our guide to legal marriage and entry rules for Thailand covers both.
When to marry in Phuket
Phuket faces the Andaman Sea, so it follows the Andaman monsoon. November to April is the dry, calm season and the natural window for beach functions. From May to October, heavy afternoon showers and rougher seas are common, particularly on the west coast. Rates fall in those months, and a wedding can work if every outdoor function has an indoor room held in reserve, which the ballroom figures below make easy to plan.
| Months | What to expect | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| November to February | Dry and comfortable, highest demand | Book resorts eight to twelve months ahead |
| March to April | Dry and hotter | Move daytime functions indoors or under shade |
| May to October | Monsoon showers, lower rates | Hold an indoor backup for every outdoor event |
Phuket resorts and their published event space
The figures below come from each resort’s published event chart on Cvent, the venue sourcing platform, checked in September 2026. “Largest seated” is the biggest figure the resort gives for guests at round tables, which is the layout an Indian reception or sangeet dinner actually uses. The standing maximum is always higher and is not the number to plan a dinner around, as our capacity gap study explains.
| Resort | Area | Largest seated space | Seated at rounds | Standing maximum | Guest rooms |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| JW Marriott Phuket Resort and Spa | Mai Khao | Mai Khao Ballroom | 350 | 600 | 262 |
| Phuket Marriott Resort and Spa, Merlin Beach | Tri Trang | Merlin Grand Ballroom, and a Beach Lawn charted at the same 350 | 350 | 650 | 414 |
| Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket | Karon | Phuket Grand Ballroom | 300 | 300 | 262 |
| Sri Panwa Phuket | Cape Panwa | Baba Space I and II | 240 | 400 | 123 |
| Banyan Tree Phuket | Laguna, Bang Tao | Lagoon Deck | 220 | 300 | 218 |
| Hyatt Regency Phuket Resort | Kamala | White Canvas, a glasshouse on the lawn | 180 | 300 | 202 |
| InterContinental Phuket Resort | Kamala | Arlang Ballroom | 160 | 220 | 221 |
| Anantara Layan Phuket Resort | Layan | Layan Beach | 150 | 150 | 91 |
Charts change as resorts renovate, so treat these as a shortlisting tool and ask each resort for its current chart before signing.
What the figures tell you
- Only two resorts on this list chart 350 seated. For a reception of 300 or more at tables, the JW Marriott and the Merlin Beach Marriott are the natural starting points.
- Beach settings seat fewer than ballrooms. Anantara Layan’s beach seats 150; Banyan Tree’s Lagoon Deck seats 220. They suit a mehendi or a welcome dinner rather than a full reception.
- Sri Panwa sleeps fewer than it seats. With 123 guest rooms and 240 seated, a full wedding there needs a second hotel for part of the guest list. Our room block study explains why this gap matters.
- A glasshouse is a real monsoon asset. Hyatt Regency’s White Canvas gives an oceanfront feel with a roof, useful from May to October.
Matching a resort to your guest list
| Guests at the reception | Where to start | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 150 | Anantara Layan, InterContinental, Hyatt Regency | Intimate beach or glasshouse settings with seated space to match |
| 150 to 250 | Banyan Tree, Sri Panwa, Hyatt Regency | Outdoor decks and event spaces that seat 180 to 240 |
| 250 to 350 | JW Marriott, Merlin Beach Marriott, Centara Grand | Ballrooms charted at 300 to 350 seated, with 260 to 410 rooms |
| More than 350 | A Bangkok or Pattaya ballroom, or two Phuket properties | No Phuket resort on this list charts more than 350 seated |

What a Phuket wedding costs
Phuket sits at the upper end of Thai pricing because of its resort tier and island demand. Our Thailand wedding cost guide sets out the full ranges by guest count and line item. Three things move a Phuket budget more than anything else:
- Season. November to February carries the highest rates; the monsoon months can be noticeably cheaper.
- Buyout or shared resort. Taking a resort exclusively gives you control of timings and privacy, but you pay for the whole room inventory.
- How quotes are written. Thai hotel quotes are usually shown before service charge and VAT, often written as “plus plus”. Read every figure with both added.
Indian functions in Phuket, practically
| Function | Where it usually works | Check with the resort |
|---|---|---|
| Haldi and mehendi | A lawn, pool deck or beach pavilion by day | Turmeric and henna rules for pool areas and linens |
| Sangeet | The ballroom, or a beach setting with a weather backup | Sound limits and the finishing time for amplified music |
| Baraat | A procession within the resort grounds | The route, the dhol, and any restriction on public roads |
| Pheras | A beach or lawn mandap | Permission for the havan fire and a wind plan |
| Reception | The largest seated room | The seated figure at rounds, not the standing maximum |
Indian catering is well established in Phuket, and many resorts either run an Indian kitchen or work with an outside Indian caterer. Confirm in writing whether the resort allows outside catering and what it charges for it, and whether Jain food can be prepared separately. Our guide to wedding catering costs explains the per-plate logic that still applies abroad.
A three-day plan that suits Phuket
| Day | Daytime | Evening |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival day | Guests land and check in | Welcome dinner by the pool or beach |
| Day two | Haldi on the lawn, then free time | Mehendi and sangeet in the ballroom |
| Day three | Baraat and pheras at the beach mandap in the cooler morning or late afternoon | Reception in the largest seated room |

Phuket’s wedding areas compared
Phuket is a large island, and where the resort sits changes the whole weekend: the transfer, the beach, the crowd and how far guests roam.
| Area | Feel | From the airport | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mai Khao and Nai Yang | Long, quiet beaches in the north | Closest | Large weddings that want calm and a short transfer |
| Bang Tao and Laguna | A cluster of resorts sharing a lagoon and facilities | Short | Guest lists spread across several hotels |
| Layan and Kamala | Smaller bays with upscale resorts | Short to moderate | Mid-size weddings with a boutique feel |
| Patong and Tri Trang | Near the busiest nightlife | Moderate | Younger guest lists who want a night out |
| Karon and Kata | Classic west-coast beaches | Longer | Families who want an easy beach holiday around the wedding |
| Cape Panwa | Quiet east-coast headland | Longest | Couples who want privacy and a different weather exposure |
Where the rest of the guests sleep
A 300-guest wedding rarely fits into one resort’s rooms, even in Phuket. The Laguna area on Bang Tao Bay is useful here because several hotels sit side by side and share a shuttle and lagoon, so a family can stay in two or three properties and still feel like one group. Elsewhere, pick an overflow hotel within a short drive and put it on the same transfer schedule. Our guide to hotel room blocks covers how to size the block against confirmed replies rather than the invitation list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Phuket resort can host the largest Indian wedding?
Among the resorts we checked, the JW Marriott Phuket Resort and Spa and the Phuket Marriott Resort and Spa at Merlin Beach publish the largest seated figures, 350 at round tables each. For more than 350 seated, look at Bangkok or Pattaya, or split functions across two properties.
Are there direct flights from India to Phuket?
Yes. IndiGo flies from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru, Air India from Delhi, and Air India Express from Hyderabad and Bengaluru. Guests from other cities connect through Bangkok.
What is the best time for a wedding in Phuket?
November to April, when the Andaman coast is dry and the sea is calm. May to October brings monsoon showers and lower rates, so plan an indoor backup for every outdoor function if you marry then.
Can we have a havan fire on the beach in Phuket?
Many resorts allow a controlled fire for the pheras, but rules vary by property and by weather. Ask for written permission, and plan a wind screen and a fire safety setup with the resort.
Do Indian guests need a visa for Phuket?
From 15 September 2026, Indian passport holders can visit Thailand visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism, and every visitor must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card before arriving.
