Koh Samui suits intimate Indian weddings of up to about 150 guests. The luxury resorts we checked publish largest seated spaces of 50 to 150 at round tables and have 70 to 175 guest rooms each, so bigger weddings need several properties. Guests fly via Bangkok on Bangkok Airways. Samui is wettest in October and November and driest from January to April.

Koh Samui is the island Indian couples choose when they want privacy and a boutique feel rather than scale. It sits in the Gulf of Thailand, which gives it a different weather pattern from Phuket, and its resorts are smaller and more secluded. Both facts shape a wedding here more than the scenery does. This guide covers access, the weather window, what the island’s best-known resorts can actually seat, and how to plan a Samui wedding that stays comfortable for families flying in from India.

For budget ranges across the country, see our Thailand wedding cost guide.

Why couples choose Samui

  • Privacy. Resorts are spread along quiet bays and headlands, and several are built around pool villas, which suits a closed guest list.
  • A different season. Samui’s rains peak later in the year than Phuket’s, so it offers dates that the Andaman coast cannot.
  • Small, polished properties. The island’s luxury resorts are designed for couples and small groups, which shows in the service.

Getting there

There are no direct flights from India to Samui. Guests fly to Bangkok and connect to Samui International Airport, which is owned and operated by Bangkok Airways; the flight takes about an hour and a quarter. The alternative is a flight to Surat Thani on the mainland followed by a ferry, which is cheaper but adds several hours and suits few wedding guests.

Entry rules changed in September 2026, when Thailand cut visa-free stays for Indians to 30 days; our Thailand legal and entry guide has the current position.

When to marry on Samui

Samui’s heaviest rain falls in October and November, the opposite of Phuket’s pattern. January to April is its driest and calmest stretch, with February usually the driest month. The middle of the year, when Phuket and Krabi are in their monsoon, is often workable on Samui, which makes the island useful for couples tied to Indian summer holidays.

What Samui resorts can seat

The figures below come from each resort’s published event chart on Cvent, checked in September 2026. “Seated” means guests at round tables, the layout for a reception or sangeet dinner.

Two other well-known Samui resorts we checked publish charts too incomplete to rely on, so they are left out. Ask any resort for its current chart before you sign.

Reading the numbers

  • 150 seated is the ceiling among these resorts. A reception for 200 or more at tables does not fit any of them.
  • Rooms are the tighter limit. W Koh Samui seats 150 but has 74 rooms; the InterContinental seats 72 with 79 rooms. Even an intimate wedding often needs a second property for part of the family.
  • The Ritz-Carlton has the most rooms, at 175, and an indoor banquet hall, which makes it the most complete single base for a wedding of 100 to 140.

Our room block study explains why the gap between seats and beds matters so much at destination venues.

Designing a wedding for Samui’s scale

Guest countApproach that works
Up to 60One villa resort taken for the weekend, functions on the beach and in villas
60 to 150One main resort for the functions, a nearby second resort for overflow rooms
150 to 250A private beach or estate venue with a hired structure, and several hotels; or choose Phuket or Hua Hin instead
Over 250Samui is the wrong island; look at Phuket, Hua Hin, Pattaya or Bangkok

Island logistics also shape the budget. Large decor builds, staging and equipment have to arrive by ferry or air, and specialist crews may need to travel from Bangkok. Keep the design light, let the setting carry the look, and put the budget into food, music and guest care. The ranges in our Thailand cost guide apply, with an island premium on anything that has to be shipped in.

Indian food on Samui usually comes from resort kitchens working to your menu or from a caterer brought in for the event. Ask early how Jain and pure vegetarian requirements will be handled, and whether ingredients and cooks need to come from the mainland.

Villa weddings

Samui has many private villa estates, and for weddings under about 60 guests they can be the best setting on the island. A villa gives the family complete privacy, a kitchen that can be run by your own caterer, and space for haldi and mehendi without hotel rules. The trade-offs are practical: villas are often up steep roads, parking for coaches is limited, and sound can carry across a bay at night. Ask about access, the neighbours and any music curfew before booking.

Guest travel, budgeted honestly

Every Samui guest flies twice, and the second leg is on a route with limited seats. Build that into the invitation timeline: share dates early, suggest a small number of arrival flights, and hold seats as a group where you can. For a wedding with many older relatives, a night in Bangkok on the way can make the journey far kinder, and it gives the family a relaxed first evening together.

Things to plan around the wider Gulf

Samui sits next to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, and ferries between the islands get busy around Koh Phangan’s monthly Full Moon Party. If any guests plan to island-hop before or after the wedding, check those dates, and keep your own boat transfers away from them.

Photographs beyond the resort

Samui rewards couples who plan an hour for portraits away from the venue. The Big Buddha temple at Wat Phra Yai in the north-east, the rock formations at Hin Ta and Hin Yai near Lamai, and the quieter west-coast beaches at sunset are the classic choices. Temples expect modest dress and respectful behaviour, so plan any temple portraits in outfits with covered shoulders, and check whether photography is allowed in each part of the site. Drone flying in Thailand needs registration, so confirm that your photographer has it before planning aerial shots.

Questions to ask a Samui resort

Ask the resortWhy it matters here
Can the whole resort, or a wing of villas, be reserved for us?Samui resorts are small, so other guests can easily share your spaces
Where is the indoor backup for each outdoor function?Showers can arrive quickly, and late-year rain is heavy
Can an outside Indian caterer work in your kitchen?Ingredients and cooks may need to come from the mainland
What is the music curfew on the beach?Sound carries across quiet bays at night
How will you move guests between villas and event spaces?Hillside villas can mean steep paths and buggy rides
Which nearby hotels do you recommend for overflow rooms?Room counts are low, so a second property is common

Frequently Asked Questions

How many guests can a Koh Samui wedding host?

Among the luxury resorts we checked, the largest published seated spaces hold 50 to 150 guests at round tables, and the resorts have 70 to 175 guest rooms. Samui suits weddings of up to about 150; larger weddings fit better in Phuket, Hua Hin, Pattaya or Bangkok.

How do guests get to Koh Samui from India?

There are no direct flights. Guests fly to Bangkok and connect on Bangkok Airways to Samui International Airport, about an hour and a quarter, or take a flight to Surat Thani and a ferry.

When is the best time for a Koh Samui wedding?

January to April is the driest stretch, with February usually the driest month. October and November are the wettest. Mid-year is often workable on Samui while Phuket is in its monsoon.

Is Koh Samui more expensive than Phuket for a wedding?

Resort rates are comparable at the top end, but island logistics add cost to anything shipped in, such as large decor, equipment and specialist crews, and guest flights cost more because every guest needs a connection.

Which Samui resort is best for an Indian wedding?

For 100 to 140 guests, The Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui combines the most rooms of the resorts we checked with an indoor banquet hall. W Koh Samui seats up to 150 on its beach, and smaller villa resorts suit weddings of 60 or fewer.
