What an engagement ceremony actually costs in 2026

Ask ten families what an engagement costs and you will get ten answers, because half of them are quoting the ring and half are quoting the party. It is driven by one decision: whether you treat the engagement as a small ritual in front of close family, or as a full social event that happens to have a ring in it. The full scale hotel engagement

Two hundred and fifty guests, a ballroom, a raised ring exchange stage, a live singer, a plated or elaborate buffet dinner, a photo and film team of six, and printed invitations posted three weeks out. Now you are at Rs 15 lakh to Rs 25 lakh, and you have effectively run a second reception. If the wedding is four months away and the same 250 people are coming to that too, ask honestly what the engagement is buying you.

The middle path that usually wins

The version we recommend most often: a hundred guests at a good banquet hall or club, strong decor concentrated on one stage, a proper photo team, a two hour cocktail plus dinner window, and no attempt to be a full evening. Venue options and what each one costs

Venue is where the fork becomes a rupee number. Engagement functions are usually half day, which means you should be paying a half day or session rate, not a full day rate. Very few venues volunteer this. Ask for it.

• Home, terrace or family farmhouse: Rs 0 to Rs 60,000. Zero rental, but budget for generator backup, extra washrooms if the guest count crosses 60, valet or parking marshals, and a small stage platform. Farmhouse rentals on the outskirts of Hyderabad, Delhi or Bengaluru run Rs 40,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh for an evening.
• Community or banquet hall: Rs 50,000 to Rs 2.5 lakh for an evening session, usually with in house catering mandated. This is the workhorse option for a 100 guest engagement.
• Club or gymkhana: Rs 75,000 to Rs 3 lakh, often member rates, usually with a corkage or beverage policy attached. Great light, tight capacity caps.
• Five star hotel banquet: rarely a rental. One negotiating point that works almost every time: engagements often fall on weekdays or in the off season, because they are timed to a muhurat rather than to a Saturday. Guest count and how per plate catering really applies

Catering is the single largest line in almost every engagement budget that is not gift heavy. The mechanics are simple and everyone still gets them wrong.

You are billed on guaranteed covers, not on who shows up. If you guarantee 250 and 190 arrive, you pay for 250. Guarantee 10 percent under your invite list, not over it, and keep a written clause allowing an upward revision until 48 hours before. An engagement is a single frame event. Everyone will remember one image: the two of you on a stage, rings in hand. That is where the decor money should go, and almost nowhere else.

Practical 2026 decor bands for an engagement:

• Home sagai floral setup: Rs 25,000 to Rs 70,000. A backdrop, a floral ring tray, entrance flowers, a few arrangements.
• Banquet hall engagement decor: Rs 1.2 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh. Stage backdrop, seating for elders, aisle or entrance treatment, table centrepieces.
• Hotel ballroom engagement decor: Rs 4 lakh to Rs 12 lakh. Fabricated backdrop, ceiling elements, imported flower content, custom furniture.

The ring exchange stage specifically

The stage needs three things a general decorator will not think about unless you ask. First, a ring tray moment: a decorated thaal or a small pedestal at the right height so the exchange is visible from the fourth row and not blocked by the couple’s backs. Second, seating for four elders on the stage, because in most families the parents come up for the blessing. Do not buy a wedding day package for an engagement. You need four to six hours, not fourteen. Realistic 2026 rates: a solo photographer at Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000, a photo plus cinema pair at Rs 60,000 to Rs 1.2 lakh, and a four to six person team with a same day edit reel at Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 4 lakh. One structural point: book the same studio for the engagement and the wedding and negotiate them as one contract. Studios routinely absorb the engagement into a wedding package for Rs 40,000 to Rs 75,000 rather than quoting it standalone at Rs 1.2 lakh.

Hair, makeup and outfits

Engagement makeup is lighter than bridal makeup and should be priced that way: Rs 12,000 to Rs 35,000 for a good city artist, Rs 45,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh for a celebrity name, plus travel if they are flying in. Groom’s sherwani or bandhgala, Rs 25,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh. Jewellery for the engagement is usually borrowed from family or rented, and rental sits at 8 to 12 percent of piece value with a refundable deposit.

The ritual side: pandit, lagna patrika and nischayam formalities

If your engagement is ritual led rather than social, there is a whole cost line that a Western style ring ceremony simply does not have.

A pandit or purohit for a nischayam, sagai puja or aashirbaad charges Rs 5,000 to Rs 25,000 for the ceremony, higher in Hyderabad and Chennai for a senior purohit who will also read the panchangam and confirm the muhurat. In Telugu and Tamil families the lagna patrika or nischayathamboolam is written and read aloud, formally fixing the wedding date. Getting it calligraphed and printed properly costs Rs 2,000 to Rs 15,000. It is a document your family will keep, so it is a bad place to economise.

Invitations, mithai, shagun and family gifting: the quiet budget killer

This is the section families skip when they build the spreadsheet and then discover as an unbudgeted Rs 3 lakh. Read it twice.

Invitations

If the engagement is a separate function with its own guest list, it needs its own card. Digital invites and a WhatsApp video cost Rs 3,000 to Rs 25,000. Mithai and dry fruit hampers

Sweet boxes for guests run Rs 350 to Rs 1,500 per box. Dry fruit hampers for close family run Rs 1,500 to Rs 8,000 each. At 60 hampers that is Rs 90,000 to Rs 4.8 lakh on its own, which is why this line quietly overtakes decor in a lot of North Indian engagements.

Shagun, trays and the exchange between families

The formal exchange of decorated thaals is the heart of a sagai or nischayam. Each family typically sends 5 to 21 trays carrying clothes, sweets, fruit, dry fruit, cosmetics and a token cash shagun. Tray decoration alone is Rs 800 to Rs 3,500 per thaal. Contents are the real number: Rs 25,000 for a modest set, Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 6 lakh for an affluent family, and considerably more where sarees and jewellery go into the trays.

Add cash shagun to the immediate family of the other side, outfits gifted to the bride or groom to wear at the ceremony, and a gift to the officiating priest. Sound, light and entertainment for a small function

An engagement does not need a wedding grade rig, and vendors will happily sell you one. What you actually need:

• Basic sound for 100 guests: two tops, a sub, two wireless mics, a small mixer and an operator. Rs 15,000 to Rs 35,000.

Regional variation: sagai, nischayam, mangni and aashirbaad

The word changes, and so does the budget shape.

North Indian sagai or mangni. Usually evening, socially large, ring centred. Heavy on gifting trays and mithai, heavy on decor, alcohol frequently served. Of the four traditions this is the one most likely to cost as much as a reception. Expect gifting to be 25 to 40 percent of the total.

Telugu nischayathartham. Morning or midday, ritual led, with the pandit, the lagna patrika reading and a formal tamboolam exchange. Guest counts of 100 to 250 are normal because both extended families attend. Food is a full sit down meal on banana leaf or a large veg buffet. Decor spend is moderate, priest and ritual spend is real, and gifting between families is substantial. Tamil nichayathartham. Similar structure, typically at a mandapam or hotel hall in the morning, with the patrikai read out and thamboolam trays exchanged. Often the cheapest of the four because the function ends by lunch, so there is no evening bar, no DJ and no late night staffing.

Marwari and Gujarati engagement. Frequently multi function: a tilak or gol dhana on one side, a formal engagement on the other. Two functions means two decor setups and two catering bills. Gifting is elaborate and jewellery heavy. Budget as if it were two events, because it is.

Bengali aashirbaad. A blessing ceremony rather than a ring exchange, held separately at each home, with the families blessing the couple with rice and trefoil. Small, intimate, and by far the lightest budget of the group. Rs 60,000 to Rs 2 lakh covers most of them comfortably.

Hidden costs, contracts and when to combine the engagement with the sangeet

What gets billed as an extra

• GST and service charge. Hotel F and B carries 18 percent GST and often a service charge on top. A Rs 4,200 plate is Rs 5,000 plus in reality. Always ask for the all inclusive number.
• Session overrun. Banquet sessions are timed. Crossing the window is Rs 15,000 to Rs 75,000 per hour, and engagements run late more often than weddings do.
• Vendor entry and outside vendor fees. Hotels charge Rs 25,000 to Rs 2 lakh to let in your own decorator or DJ.
• Power and generator. At home or on a lawn, Rs 8,000 to Rs 40,000 for a silent DG set for the evening.

Before you pay the advance

Get one written quote per vendor that names the deliverable, the hours, the crew size, the taxes and the cancellation terms. Cap the advance at 30 percent for venue and 40 percent for creative vendors, keep 25 percent payable after delivery, and pay everything by bank transfer against an invoice with a GSTIN. If the vendor will not put a date change clause in writing, walk. Engagements move because muhurats move.

Here is the sharpest saving available on this page. If the engagement and the wedding are within a few weeks and the guest lists overlap, run the ring ceremony as a 45 minute segment at the start of the sangeet evening.
