A Rs 25 lakh wedding budget in India comfortably funds three functions for about 200 guests at a good four-star or banquet venue. Venue and catering take roughly 46 percent, or Rs 11.5 lakh. Decor, photography, outfits and planning share most of the rest, with 12 percent held back as contingency.

What Rs 25 lakh really means in 2026

Rs 25 lakh is the point where an Indian wedding stops being improvised and starts being planned. Below it, families usually make decisions one vendor at a time and hope the total behaves. At Rs 25 lakh you have enough money to buy quality in every category, but not enough to buy quality carelessly in any of them. Every rupee has to be allocated deliberately, and the single decision that governs everything else is guest count.

Here is the honest framing. A Rs 25 lakh wedding is a genuinely good wedding. Three functions, a respectable venue, food people remember, a photographer whose work you will still like in ten years, decor that photographs well, and a bride who is not doing her own makeup at 5 am. What it is not is a spectacle. It cannot absorb a palace hire, an imported-flower mandap, a playback singer, or a hundred-room outstation block. Those things start appearing at the Rs 50 lakh tier and become normal at Rs 1 crore and above.

The families who are happiest at this budget are the ones who accept that early. The families who are unhappiest are the ones who try to run a 500-guest, five-function wedding on Rs 25 lakh and end up with a thin version of everything. Thin decor, buffet queues, a videographer with one camera, and a bride who spent the reception apologising for the food.

Everything below assumes 2026 pricing, three functions (a mehendi or haldi, a sangeet, and a wedding day with lunch or reception), and a Tier-1 Indian city that is not Mumbai or Gurgaon. Adjust for your city using the section further down. If you want to model your own numbers as you read, our wedding budget calculator uses the same category weights.

Why jewellery sits outside the budget

Almost every family we work with at this tier funds jewellery from a separate pot, usually gold accumulated over years or bought as an investment rather than an event cost. If you fold a realistic bridal set into Rs 25 lakh, you are not planning a Rs 25 lakh wedding any more, you are planning a Rs 16 lakh wedding with jewellery attached. Keep it out, name it out loud in the family conversation, and budget it separately. The same logic applies to honeymoon travel and to the bride’s trousseau beyond her three function outfits.

The number that matters most

Catering and venue together are Rs 11,50,000, or 46 percent of everything. That is not a quirk of this plan, it is the structure of Indian weddings. Nearly half your money is a direct function of how many people eat and how many days they eat for. Cut ten guests and roughly Rs 12,000 to Rs 18,000 falls out across three functions before you have touched anything else. Add fifty and you have burned a third of your contingency without a single new decision. Our per-plate cost guide and the catering cost breakdown go deeper on how caterers price minimum guarantees.

The same Rs 25 lakh, three completely different weddings

The most useful thing we can show you is what happens when you hold the money constant and move only the guest list. These are three real shapes we have executed at this budget.

The honest argument for the smaller list

We will say this plainly because most planners will not. At Rs 25 lakh, the 120-guest wedding is the better wedding, and it is not close. The per-cover jump from Rs 850 to Rs 1,750 is the difference between a competent buffet and food people talk about for a year. The decor budget stops being spread across a 400-person hall and starts concentrating on one room that photographs beautifully. You can afford the photographer you actually wanted instead of his second unit. Guests get seated service instead of queueing. And critically, the couple gets to speak to almost everyone present, which at 400 guests is arithmetically impossible.

The 400-guest version is not a bad wedding, and for many families the obligation list genuinely is 400 people. But be clear-eyed about the trade: you are buying reach at the cost of quality in every single line item. If your family can compress the list, our guide to intimate wedding planning in India covers how to do it without causing a decade of resentment, and the cost by guest count breakdown shows exactly what each additional fifty people costs across the whole budget.

A practical middle path: keep 350 people for the wedding lunch, which is the socially load-bearing function, and cap the sangeet and mehendi at 120. Caterers price each function separately, so this works cleanly, and it recovers about Rs 2 lakh you can redeploy into decor and photography.

City reality: where Rs 25 lakh goes furthest

The same Rs 25 lakh is a different wedding in different cities, and the variance is larger than most families expect. Venue rental, F and B minimums and skilled labour rates diverge sharply, while flowers, outfits and photography are closer to national pricing.

Hyderabad, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Coimbatore

This is the sweet spot. In Hyderabad, Rs 25 lakh comfortably buys 200 guests across three functions at a good four-star property, or 150 guests at a genuinely luxury address if you time it into the May to July or August lean season. Jaipur adds heritage venue options in the same band, including smaller havelis and boutique palaces that are out of reach in the December peak but negotiable in the monsoon window. Banquet rental in these cities typically runs Rs 60,000 to Rs 1,80,000 per function for a 200-guest space, against Rs 2 lakh or more in the metros.

Mumbai and Delhi NCR

Expect to lose 25 to 35 percent of your effective purchasing power. Five-star F and B minimums in South Mumbai and central Delhi start around Rs 2,800 to Rs 3,800 per cover before taxes, which alone would consume your entire catering line at 200 guests for a single function. The workable Rs 25 lakh wedding in these markets is either a 120-guest affair at a good hotel, or a 200-guest wedding pushed out to Navi Mumbai, Thane, Manesar or the Delhi to Jaipur highway belt where farmhouse and resort pricing behaves like a Tier-2 city. Do not fight this. The families who insist on a Bandra or Chanakyapuri address at Rs 25 lakh end up with a small, tense wedding.

Tier-2 and hometown weddings

In Indore, Nagpur, Vijayawada, Madurai, Rajkot or Bhubaneswar, Rs 25 lakh is a large wedding by local standards. You can run 350 guests across four functions with real decor, or 200 guests at a level that reads as unambiguously premium. Two cautions. Skilled specialist vendors, particularly cinematographers, sound engineers and floral designers, often have to be flown in from a metro, and their travel and stay adds Rs 60,000 to Rs 1,50,000 that a metro wedding does not carry. Second, venue infrastructure is weaker, so budget for generator backup and additional lighting, which our lighting cost guide breaks down.

Destination within India

Goa, Udaipur, Rishikesh and Coorg are possible at Rs 25 lakh only at 60 to 90 guests, and only off-season. The maths is simple: once you are paying for guest rooms, the room block becomes your largest single line and crowds out everything else. It is a beautiful choice for a small list and a poor one for anything above 100 people at this budget.

How many functions Rs 25 lakh can carry, and what to cut first

Three functions is the natural ceiling at this budget with 200 guests. Four is possible at 120 guests. Five functions at 200 guests is where Rs 25 lakh weddings go to die, because every additional function carries a fixed overhead of venue, decor, sound, photography coverage and staff regardless of how small you keep it. A modest extra function almost never costs less than Rs 1.6 lakh once it is real.

When the numbers do not fit, cut in this order. This is the sequence we use, and it is deliberately ranked by how little the guests will notice.

  • Cut the fourth and fifth functions first. Move haldi to the family home or the hotel suite with an aunt handling snacks. Saves Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh and nobody has ever complained about a haldi at home.
  • Cut imported and out-of-season flowers. A designer working with seasonal marigold, tuberose, orchids sourced domestically and good structural rentals will beat an imported-flower setup at 60 percent of the cost. See the florist cost guide for what actually drives floral pricing.
  • Cut printed invitations to 60 cards. Print for elders and for the families you must honour physically. Everyone else gets a well-designed digital invite. Saves Rs 40,000 to Rs 80,000 against a full printed run, as our invitation cost breakdown shows.
  • Cut the live band or performer. A strong DJ with proper sound delivers more dancefloor than a mid-tier live act at three times the price.
  • Cut the room block, not the room quality. Offer a negotiated rate and let guests book their own. Subsidise only the six to ten rooms for immediate family and elders.
  • Cut menu breadth, never menu quality. Twelve excellent dishes beat twenty-six mediocre ones, and caterers price breadth aggressively.

What you should protect at almost any cost: the photographer and cinematographer, the food quality on the main day, the bride’s comfort on the morning of, and the contingency. Those four are what people remember and what cannot be repaired afterwards. Our photographer cost guide explains why the Rs 1.7 lakh band is the meaningful quality threshold in most cities.

What a Rs 25 lakh wedding cannot have

This section exists because vague budgeting causes more distress than any single vendor. Here is what is genuinely out of reach, stated without hedging.

  • A palace or heritage-fort venue with exclusive use. Full buyouts at properties of that class start well above your entire budget. Some heritage hotels will sell you a single ballroom or a courtyard for one function, and that is a legitimate way to get one heritage moment, but the three-day palace wedding is a Rs 1 crore proposition. Compare against our Rs 2 crore budget breakdown to see where that actually sits.
  • An imported-flower mandap. Hydrangea, imported roses, peonies and orchids flown in are priced per stem in a way that puts a single structure at Rs 3 lakh or more, which is more than your entire decor allocation.
  • A celebrity performer or playback singer. Established names command fees that exceed this whole budget. A capable local live band or a well-known regional artist is the realistic ceiling, and even that competes directly with your decor line.
  • A large outstation room block. Blocking 60 to 100 rooms for two nights at a decent property is a Rs 12 lakh to Rs 20 lakh commitment on its own. At Rs 25 lakh you subsidise family and elders only.
  • Multiple hero decor setups per function. You get one strong visual anchor per function. Choose it deliberately, usually the mandap on the wedding day and the stage on sangeet night, and keep the rest clean and restrained. The decorator cost guide covers how to brief this properly.
  • An unlimited premium bar. Where permitted, expect corkage and licensing to make an open premium bar a Rs 3 lakh to Rs 6 lakh line. Our wedding bar and alcohol cost guide explains the licence and corkage mechanics that catch families out.
  • Drone-heavy cinematic packages with same-day edits and a five-person crew. You are buying a strong two-and-two team, not a production house.

None of this makes a Rs 25 lakh wedding lesser. It makes it a different product, one built on restraint and good judgement rather than volume. The weddings at this budget that people remember are the ones where the family picked three things to do exceptionally and did everything else competently.

Contingency and the three ways this budget overruns

Hold back 12 percent, or Rs 3 lakh. We argue for 10 to 15 percent at every budget level, but at Rs 25 lakh it is closest to non-negotiable, because there is no fat elsewhere to absorb a shock. At Rs 1 crore, an unexpected Rs 4 lakh is an irritation. At Rs 25 lakh it is 16 percent of your budget and it will come straight out of the decor or the photographer.

Treat contingency as a separate account you do not touch until sixty days out. If it is unspent at that point, it becomes your upgrade fund and you can put it into food or florals, where it does the most visible work. Families who fold contingency into the main allocation from day one spend it by month two and then start borrowing from categories that cannot afford it.

Overrun one: guest-count creep

This is the biggest and the most predictable. The list closes at 200, then the extended family adds names, then colleagues appear, then plus-ones. A drift from 200 to 260 adds roughly Rs 2 lakh to Rs 2.4 lakh across catering, hospitality, seating and gifting. The defence is procedural, not emotional: close the list in writing, give each side of the family a fixed number, and require any addition to be traded against a removal from the same side’s allocation.

Overrun two: the last-fortnight additions

Extra lighting because the venue looked dark in the site visit. A second makeup artist because three cousins also want to be done. An extra dhol team. A better car for the couple’s exit. Individually each is Rs 15,000 to Rs 40,000, and collectively they routinely add Rs 1.5 lakh in the final two weeks, when your negotiating leverage is zero and vendors know it. Book the entertainment, transport and additional artists in the same contract round as the main vendors, not in the panic window. Our transport cost guide and bridal makeup cost guide list the add-ons that typically appear late.

Overrun three: taxes and the invisible extras

Many quotes at this tier are presented before GST, before service charge, and before overtime. A Rs 7 lakh catering quote can settle at Rs 8.1 lakh once taxes and a service charge land. Venue quotes routinely exclude generator charges, extra housekeeping, late-hours penalties past midnight, and vendor entry fees the hotel charges your outside decorator. Ask every vendor for an all-inclusive landed number in writing, and specifically ask what is billed as an extra. The mechanics of holding vendors to this are covered in our wedding budget planning guide and the full Indian wedding cost breakdown.

Contracts, advances and holding the line

At this budget your leverage comes from timing and clarity, not from volume. You are not the biggest client any large vendor will sign this season, so you win on being decisive, paying on schedule and booking early. Here is what we insist on for clients at the Rs 25 lakh tier.

Never pay an advance without a written scope. The scope should name deliverables, crew size, hours of coverage, delivery timelines, and the exact list of what is excluded. For catering, that means the menu by course, the number of live counters, the staff-to-guest ratio and the service style. For decor, it means the specific flowers by name and the structures being rented versus fabricated.

Cap advances at 25 to 30 percent. Structure the rest as a milestone at thirty days out and the balance on the event date or the day after. Any vendor demanding more than half up front at this budget is managing their own cash-flow risk with your money.

Get the tax position in writing. Every number in your budget sheet should be the landed, all-inclusive figure. Reconciling pre-tax quotes across fourteen vendors is how families discover they are Rs 2 lakh over in the final week.

Negotiate on date, not on price. A Tuesday in July gets you a genuinely better property than a Saturday in December at the same money. Off-peak and mid-week is the single largest discount available to you, often 20 to 30 percent on venue and rooms, and it costs you nothing in quality.

Decide early whether you are hiring a planner. At Rs 25 lakh a full-service fee of 5 to 8 percent is real money, and it is a legitimate question whether to spend it. Our view: if you are running three functions with more than a dozen vendors and both families are working full-time, the fee usually pays for itself in negotiated rates and avoided overruns. If you have one function and family bandwidth to spare, hire on-the-day coordination only. The planner cost guide lays out both models honestly, and the venue cost guide covers what to check before you sign a hall contract.

One last thing. Decide your walk-away number before you start meeting vendors, write it down, and tell both families what it is. A Rs 25 lakh budget that everyone has agreed to is a pleasure to execute. A Rs 25 lakh budget that one side privately thinks is Rs 35 lakh is the source of nearly every difficult wedding we have ever been called into.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Rs 25 lakh enough for a wedding in India in 2026?

Yes, for about 200 guests across three functions at a good four-star or premium banquet venue in a Tier-1 city outside Mumbai and Delhi NCR. In a Tier-2 city it stretches to 350 guests or four functions. In South Mumbai or central Delhi it realistically supports 120 guests. The constraint is almost never the budget itself, it is the guest list attached to it.

How much of a Rs 25 lakh wedding budget goes to food and venue?

Roughly 46 percent, or about Rs 11.5 lakh. Catering across three functions takes around Rs 7 lakh at Rs 1,150 to Rs 1,200 per cover, and venue rental or the food-and-beverage minimum takes around Rs 4.5 lakh. This is why guest count dominates everything: nearly half your budget scales directly with the number of people eating and the number of days they eat.

Should jewellery be included in a Rs 25 lakh wedding budget?

No. Most families we work with fund jewellery separately, as a family asset rather than an event cost. Folding a realistic bridal set into Rs 25 lakh effectively turns it into a Rs 16 lakh wedding. Keep jewellery, honeymoon travel and the wider trousseau outside the number, and say so explicitly in the family conversation so nobody is planning against a different figure.

How many functions can Rs 25 lakh cover?

Three is the natural ceiling at 200 guests, and four is workable at 120 guests. Each additional function carries a fixed overhead of venue, decor, sound, photography coverage and staffing, so a modest extra event rarely costs less than Rs 1.6 lakh once it is real. If you need a fourth, host haldi at home, which saves Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh.

What contingency should I keep in a Rs 25 lakh wedding budget?

Hold 10 to 15 percent, so Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 3.75 lakh, in a separate account you do not touch until sixty days before the wedding. At this budget there is no slack elsewhere to absorb a shock, and an unexpected Rs 4 lakh would otherwise come straight out of decor or photography. If it is unspent at the sixty-day mark, redeploy it into food or flowers.

Is a 120-guest wedding at Rs 25 lakh better than a 400-guest one?

In our experience, clearly yes. At 120 guests the per-cover spend roughly doubles, decor concentrates into one room instead of spreading thin, and you can hire the photographer you actually wanted. Guests get seated service rather than buffet queues, and the couple can genuinely speak to everyone. The 400-guest version buys reach at the cost of quality in every single line item.
