A Rs 50 lakh wedding budget in India buys either three functions for 350 guests at a good 5-star hotel in your home city, or a two and a half day destination wedding for 150 guests at a Goa or Rajasthan resort with the room block covered. Venue and food take roughly 38 to 45 percent either way.
Rs 50 lakh is the first budget where taste beats spend
There is a threshold in Indian wedding planning where the constraint stops being money and starts being judgement. On our books that threshold sits at about Rs 50 lakh. Below it, every good decision is a trade: a better photographer means a smaller flower budget, a hotel lawn means fewer guests. At Rs 50 lakh the trades soften. You can hire a named venue, a real designer, a top-tier photography team and a proper hospitality desk in the same wedding, and still have contingency left. What you cannot do is buy all of it carelessly.
That is the honest framing for this tier. A Rs 50 lakh wedding that is planned badly looks almost identical to a Rs 25 lakh wedding that was planned well, because the extra Rs 25 lakh disappears into guest count, extra functions and last-minute upgrades that nobody photographs. A Rs 50 lakh wedding that is planned well looks like it cost far more, because the money went into three or four visible, high-leverage places and nowhere else.
The second thing that changes at this tier is that a genuine fork appears. For the first time you can seriously choose between a large, generous, three-function wedding at a 5-star hotel in your own city and a real destination wedding at a resort in Goa, Udaipur or Jaipur with the room block on you. Both cost about Rs 50 lakh. They produce completely different weddings. Most of this guide is about pricing that fork properly so you choose it on purpose rather than by drift.
One clarification before the numbers. Everything below excludes jewellery and gold. Indian families almost never fund jewellery from the event budget, and mixing the two is the single fastest way to make a planning conversation useless. Attire is included. Jewellery is not. If you want to sanity-check your own split before reading on, run it through our wedding budget calculator first.
The full Rs 50 lakh allocation, line by line
This is the allocation we would defend in a client meeting for a three-function wedding of about 350 guests in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune or Chennai at a good 5-star hotel. City tier matters: the same plan in Delhi or Mumbai runs 15 to 20 percent hotter on venue and food, which usually means cutting to about 300 guests to hold the same total.
| Category | Amount | Share of budget | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Venue rental and F&B | Rs 19,00,000 | 38% | Three functions, 350 guests, hotel banquet plus lawn, inclusive of taxes on food |
| Decor and floral design | Rs 8,50,000 | 17% | Designer fee, three set-ups, real flower installations, lighting, stage and mandap |
| Photography and film | Rs 4,50,000 | 9% | Lead plus second shooter, cinematographer, teaser, full film, album |
| Attire, beauty and grooming | Rs 4,00,000 | 8% | Bride and groom outfits for three functions, makeup artist, mehndi, hair |
| Guest hospitality and transport | Rs 4,00,000 | 8% | Room block for outstation family, airport transfers, welcome hampers, desk staff |
| Entertainment | Rs 3,25,000 | 6.5% | Known DJ, sangeet choreography, live band or dhol, anchor, sound and stage |
| Planning and execution | Rs 3,00,000 | 6% | Planner flat fee, production crew, on-ground coordinators across all days |
| Invitations, gifting and favours | Rs 1,50,000 | 3% | Printed cards, digital suite, return gifts, bridal party gifting |
| Contingency | Rs 1,50,000 | 3% | Held back deliberately, released in the final ten days |
| Priest, rituals and puja logistics | Rs 75,000 | 1.5% | Pandit or purohit, samagri, havan set-up, ritual assistance |
Two lines in that table are load-bearing. The first is contingency at 3 percent. Families at this tier consistently want to spend it in advance on something visible, and it consistently gets consumed anyway by extra guests, extra hours and one upgrade the couple falls in love with in week eight. Treat it as spent and be pleasantly surprised.
The second is the planner line at 6 percent. At Rs 50 lakh you should be paying a flat professional fee, not a percentage and never a commission-funded arrangement where the planner earns from vendors instead of from you. The economics of that are worked through in our wedding planner cost guide, and the difference in what you actually get is large.
Archetype one: 350 guests, three functions, a 5-star hotel at home
This is what most families at this budget choose, and for defensible reasons. Everyone you owe an invitation to can come. Elderly relatives sleep in their own beds. Nobody has to book flights. The wedding stays socially complete, which in most Indian families is not a soft benefit, it is the entire point.
The mechanics: a mehendi or haldi in a smaller hall or poolside for around 200, a sangeet in the main banquet for 300, and the wedding plus reception across the lawn and ballroom for 350. At a good 5-star property outside Delhi and Mumbai, expect a per-plate of Rs 2,200 to Rs 3,200 for a strong vegetarian spread, and Rs 2,800 to Rs 4,000 where you want live counters, a serious dessert station and a non-vegetarian section. Our per-plate cost guide breaks this down by city and menu depth.
Do the arithmetic honestly. Three functions at an average of 285 attending guests across them, at roughly Rs 2,400 all in, is about Rs 20.5 lakh of food before venue rental. That is why the Rs 19 lakh line in the table assumes you negotiated rental into the F&B commitment rather than paying both separately, which is the standard structure at this tier and is discussed further below. If the hotel insists on charging rental on top, your guest list needs to come down by 40 to 50 people, not your decor.
Where this archetype wins: guest count above 250, a family with heavy social obligation, elderly guests, a bride or groom whose parents want the whole city there, or a short planning runway. Where it loses: it is one wedding day surrounded by logistics, not a shared holiday. Guests arrive, eat, congratulate and drive home. For families whose priority is time with people rather than presence of people, that is a real cost. Our comparison of destination versus hometown weddings works through that trade-off in more depth.
Archetype two: 150 guests, two and a half days, a Goa or Rajasthan resort
The same Rs 50 lakh buys a genuine destination wedding, provided you are ruthless about one number: 150 guests. Not 180. Not 200. The room block is the whole budget, and every ten extra guests is roughly four extra rooms across three nights, which is Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh gone before they have eaten anything.
| Category | Amount | Share | Detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Room block | Rs 21,00,000 | 42% | About 55 rooms, three nights, Rs 12,000 to Rs 14,000 net with breakfast |
| F&B across functions | Rs 11,50,000 | 23% | Welcome dinner, mehendi lunch, sangeet, wedding, farewell brunch |
| Decor and florals | Rs 6,00,000 | 12% | Four set-ups, outdoor lighting, mandap, weather contingency |
| Photography and film | Rs 4,50,000 | 9% | Team of four, travel and stay included in the quote |
| Planning and on-ground team | Rs 2,50,000 | 5% | Planner fee, travel desk, room allocation, guest manifests |
| Entertainment | Rs 2,50,000 | 5% | DJ, sound, sangeet choreography, one live act |
| Guest travel and transfers | Rs 2,00,000 | 4% | Airport and station transfers, in-resort shuttles, group flight coordination |
The Rs 21 lakh room line assumes you are hosting rooms, which at this tier is expected. If your family follows the increasingly common practice of hosting two of the three nights and letting guests cover the third, roughly Rs 6 lakh frees up and can go into decor or a bigger entertainment moment. Say which model you are following in the very first invitation. Ambiguity about who pays for rooms is the most reliable source of family friction in destination weddings.
Season is not a detail here, it is the difference between this working and not working. Goa in late November through December, or Udaipur and Jaipur in December and January, will price 40 to 60 percent above the numbers above. The same resorts in July, August, or the second half of April are comfortably inside them. Our destination wedding cost guide maps the season bands property by property.
Where this archetype wins: a guest list that is genuinely under 175, a couple with a large NRI contingent who are flying anyway, a family that values three days together over one large evening, and photography that will look categorically better because the light and the architecture are doing half the work. Where it loses: any obligation list above 200, elderly guests with mobility limits, and families who will be judged locally for not hosting at home.
Home hotel or destination: how to actually choose
| Factor | Home city 5-star, 350 guests | Destination resort, 150 guests |
|---|---|---|
| Total budget | Rs 48 lakh to Rs 52 lakh | Rs 48 lakh to Rs 55 lakh |
| Effective spend per guest | Rs 14,000 to Rs 15,000 | Rs 33,000 to Rs 36,000 |
| Days of celebration | Two, functions on separate evenings | Two and a half, continuous |
| Who you can invite | Full social obligation list | Immediate family and close friends only |
| Room nights you fund | 25 to 40 for outstation family | 150 to 165 for the whole party |
| Decor budget available | Rs 8.5 lakh, must build the whole environment | Rs 6 lakh, the property supplies the backdrop |
| Weather risk | Low, indoor fallback exists | Real, needs a costed plan B |
| Planning runway needed | 4 to 6 months | 8 to 12 months for a good date |
| Biggest failure mode | Guest list creeps past 400 and food breaks the budget | Guest list creeps past 180 and rooms break the budget |
The decision rule we give clients is simple. Write the obligation list, the one where removing a name causes a phone call. If it is over 200, the home hotel wedding is the correct answer and a destination wedding at this budget will be a compromised version of both. If it is genuinely under 175, the destination wedding gives you a materially better wedding for the same money, because the venue is doing work you would otherwise pay a decorator for. Anything between 175 and 200 needs a hard conversation, not a spreadsheet.
If neither shape fits, the third option worth pricing is a smaller, denser wedding: 100 guests, one exceptional property, everything upgraded. That is covered in our guide to intimate wedding planning.
What genuinely upgrades between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 50 lakh
Doubling the budget does not double anything. It changes the category of vendor you are buying from in six specific places, and those six are where the difference is visible.
- A named venue instead of an available one. At Rs 25 lakh you take the property that has your date. At Rs 50 lakh you pick the property and negotiate the date. That single shift changes every photograph. Our venue cost guide and the 5-star hotel wedding cost breakdown cover what each band buys.
- A decor designer rather than a decorator. A decorator executes a reference image you send. A designer builds a concept across three functions, controls the colour story, and says no to things. The fee difference is roughly Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 3 lakh and it is the highest-return upgrade at this tier. See our decorator cost breakdown.
- Real flowers at installation scale. Not garlands and table arrangements, but a hanging floral ceiling, a full mandap in fresh stems, an entrance arch that reads in wide shots. Budget Rs 3 lakh to Rs 4.5 lakh of the decor line specifically for florals and check the stem list, not the render. Our florist cost guide explains how to read a quote.
- A photography team, not a photographer. Lead plus second shooter, a dedicated cinematographer, a same-day teaser and a properly edited film. This is the Rs 3.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh band described in our wedding photographer cost guide, and it is the deliverable your family will actually still have in twenty years.
- A known DJ and a real sangeet production. Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.8 lakh for a DJ with a following, proper line array sound and a lighting operator, rather than the venue’s in-house system. Detail in our DJ cost guide and sangeet night cost breakdown.
- A staffed hospitality desk. Two to four people doing nothing but room allocation, arrival calls, transfers, gifting and elderly-guest care. Rs 60,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh, and the single most commented-upon thing at every wedding that has one. See wedding hospitality costs.
Notice what is not on that list: more guests, more functions, or a fourth outfit. Those consume budget without changing how the wedding feels.
What Rs 50 lakh still will not buy
Being clear about the ceiling saves families three months of expensive discovery.
A full palace buyout is out of reach. Exclusive use of a heritage palace property in Rajasthan starts well above this number once you include the mandatory room-night commitment, and the true entry point for that experience sits closer to Rs 1.5 crore. Our Rs 2 crore wedding budget guide covers what a buyout actually involves. What Rs 50 lakh can buy is a beautiful function within a heritage property, sharing the estate with other guests, which is a genuinely good outcome as long as nobody was promised exclusivity.
A marquee celebrity performance is out. A top-tier playback singer or a national headline act commands Rs 40 lakh to well over a crore plus production, travel and rider. What is available and often better value at this tier is a strong regional live band, a well-known regional artist, or a high-quality qawwali or folk ensemble at Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 6 lakh.
A 500-guest destination wedding does not exist at Rs 50 lakh. The room block alone would be Rs 55 lakh to Rs 70 lakh before a single function. Families sometimes try to solve this by asking guests to fund their own rooms, which usually produces a wedding where a third of the invited list quietly does not travel. If the list is 500, host at home. The relationship between headcount and total cost is laid out in our cost by guest count guide.
You also cannot do everything at once. A four-function wedding, 400 guests, a destination, a designer, a top photography team and a headline act is a Rs 1 crore wedding. Pick the two things that matter most to your family and fund those properly.
The negotiation leverage a Rs 50 lakh budget actually has
Rs 50 lakh is a serious piece of business for any hotel banquet team, and it should be negotiated as one. Four levers matter, in this order.
Off-season and midweek dates. This is the largest single discount available to you, and it costs you nothing but flexibility. A Sunday-to-Tuesday wedding in a shoulder month at a property that is running 45 percent occupancy will be quoted 20 to 35 percent below the same property on a Saturday in peak season. If your muhurat window allows any choice at all, ask the sales manager which of your acceptable dates are soft, and negotiate against those.
Room-night commitment. Hotels care more about occupancy than about your F&B. Committing to a block of 30 to 60 room nights, contractually, unlocks concessions that a pure banquet booking never will: waived venue rental, complimentary suites for the couple and both sets of parents, free use of a second space for a smaller function, late checkout for the whole block. Ask for the concessions in writing against the commitment.
F&B minimum instead of rental. The standard structure at this tier is a minimum food and beverage spend with rental folded in or waived. This is almost always better for you than paying separate rental, because you were going to spend the money on food anyway. Get the minimum stated as a rupee figure, not a per-plate multiplied by a guaranteed headcount, so a small drop in attendance does not trigger a shortfall charge.
Bundled inclusions. Ask specifically for what the hotel can give at zero marginal cost to itself: in-house sound in the smaller hall, existing uplighters, the poolside space for a haldi, printing of place cards, welcome drinks, and a waiver on outside-vendor entry fees for your decorator and photographer. That last one alone can be Rs 50,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh at some properties.
Two things to lock into the contract before any advance leaves your account: a written cancellation and date-shift policy with the refund percentages by date band, and a clause that the quoted per-plate is held for your final guest count with a stated tolerance, usually plus or minus 10 percent. Our wedding budget planning guide has the full contract checklist.
GST and service charge: the number that surprises families
Almost every family we work with at this tier has one bad afternoon when they realise the quote they have been building the plan around was pre-tax. Handle it on day one instead.
Hotel banquet food and beverage attracts GST, and hotel room tariffs attract GST at a rate that depends on the room tariff band, which means a Rs 19 lakh F&B commitment is not Rs 19 lakh out of your account. Many properties also apply a service charge on top of the base, and then compute tax on the combined figure. Rates and slabs are set centrally and do get revised, so confirm the current position from the official CBIC GST portal or ask the hotel to state the exact rate applied on your proposal in writing.
The three practical rules:
- Insist that every hotel proposal is presented as a final, tax-inclusive number. If a sales manager quotes you a per-plate, the very next question is whether that figure includes taxes and service charge. Write the answer on the proposal.
- Alcohol is billed and taxed separately. Liquor sits outside GST and is taxed under state excise, which is why the bar line never behaves like the food line and why corkage on your own stock is negotiated separately. Our wedding bar and alcohol cost guide covers the permit and corkage mechanics state by state.
- Independent vendors differ. Some decorators, photographers and DJs are GST-registered and will add it; some are below the threshold and will not. Ask before you compare two quotes, because a quote that looks 15 percent cheaper often is not.
Build the plan on tax-inclusive numbers throughout, or your Rs 50 lakh budget quietly becomes a Rs 56 lakh wedding.
The three ways a Rs 50 lakh budget leaks
One: the guest list drifts by 60 people and nobody recalculates. This is the dominant failure mode at this tier. Sixty extra guests at Rs 2,400 across three functions is roughly Rs 4.3 lakh of food, plus decor scale, plus seating, plus favours, plus in some cases another round of transport. The money does not come from anywhere new, so it comes out of decor and photography in week eleven. The fix is mechanical: freeze the list at a stated number, and make every addition after that date require a corresponding subtraction. Announce this to both families in writing early, when it is a policy rather than a rejection.
Two: the fourth function that was never budgeted. A budget built for mehendi, sangeet and wedding grows a haldi, then a cocktail evening, then a post-wedding brunch. Each addition looks small in isolation, perhaps Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 3 lakh, and each one carries hidden weight: another decor set-up, another day of the photography team, another set of outfits, another round of hospitality. Two extra functions on a Rs 50 lakh plan is a Rs 6 lakh to Rs 9 lakh problem. Decide the function list before you sign the venue, not after.
Three: paying for the same thing twice. At this budget the invisible leak is duplicated scope. The hotel includes basic lighting and you also buy it from the decorator. The decorator quotes florals and so does a separate florist. The planner books transport that the hotel would have supplied against your room commitment. The photographer and the videographer both bill drone time. Every one of these is a Rs 40,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh overlap, and four of them is your entire contingency. The remedy is a single consolidated scope sheet listing every deliverable and exactly one vendor against each, signed off before advances go out. This is the least glamorous part of a planner’s job and the part that most reliably pays their fee back.
Get those three right and a Rs 50 lakh wedding in 2026 looks and feels like considerably more. Get them wrong and it looks like Rs 30 lakh with a large bill attached.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many guests can a Rs 50 lakh wedding budget cover in India?
About 350 guests across three functions at a 5-star hotel in a tier-1 city outside Delhi and Mumbai, or roughly 300 in Delhi and Mumbai where per-plate and rental run 15 to 20 percent higher. For a destination wedding where you fund the room block, the ceiling is much lower at about 150 guests, because rooms alone consume 40 to 45 percent of the total.
Is a Rs 50 lakh destination wedding actually possible in Goa or Udaipur?
Yes, at 150 guests over two and a half days, provided you avoid peak season. Expect roughly Rs 21 lakh on a 55-room block for three nights, Rs 11.5 lakh on food across five functions, and the remainder on decor, photography, entertainment and transfers. The same wedding in late December at a marquee Udaipur property would cost 40 to 60 percent more and does not fit this budget.
What percentage of a Rs 50 lakh wedding budget should go to venue and catering?
Between 38 and 45 percent. For a home-city hotel wedding we allocate Rs 19 lakh, or 38 percent, with venue rental negotiated into the food and beverage commitment rather than billed separately. For a destination wedding the combined rooms and food figure is closer to 65 percent, which is precisely why the guest list has to be so much tighter.
What does Rs 50 lakh buy that Rs 25 lakh does not?
Six specific upgrades: a venue you chose rather than one that was free, a decor designer instead of a decorator, real flower installations at scale, a photography team with a second shooter and a cinematic film, a known DJ with proper production, and a staffed hospitality desk. It also buys a planner on a transparent flat fee rather than a commission arrangement.
Does Rs 50 lakh include jewellery and gold?
No. Every figure in this guide excludes jewellery and gold, which Indian families almost universally fund separately from the event budget. Bridal and groom attire for three functions is included at about Rs 4 lakh. If you fold jewellery into the same number, the event budget effectively drops to Rs 35 lakh or less and the plan described here stops working.
How far in advance should I book for a Rs 50 lakh wedding?
Four to six months is workable for a home-city hotel wedding, since properties hold banquet inventory later than room inventory. A destination wedding needs eight to twelve months if you want a specific resort on a specific date, and closer to fourteen months for a peak-season Rajasthan property. Booking earlier is also your main negotiating lever on off-season and midweek pricing.
