A Shimla wedding costs roughly Rs 10 lakh to Rs 35 lakh for 100 to 200 guests, and the published numbers disagree more here than anywhere else in India. Per-plate rates run Rs 1,500 at DLS Hillcrest to Rs 3,700 at Deventure. The town itself has very few venues, so most real weddings happen in the Kufri and Theog belts outside it.
Himachal’s capital, and the state’s most misunderstood wedding market
Shimla sits at about 2,200 metres along a ridge in the lower Himalaya, and it was the summer capital of British India from 1864. That history is why it looks the way it does: a Mall, a Ridge, a church, and a stock of colonial-era buildings that no purpose-built resort town in India can imitate.
It is also the reason the wedding market is awkward. Shimla was built as a hill town for walking, not for 300-guest events with truck access. The town proper has very few venues that can hold a real wedding, and almost every serious Shimla wedding actually happens in the belts outside it, at Kufri, Theog, Chail or Mashobra. Couples who search for a Shimla wedding and then look only inside the town come away thinking the market does not exist.

Why published Shimla wedding costs disagree by 3x
Before any numbers, the disagreement, because you will hit it within ten minutes of searching. Four Himachal planners and hotels, all writing about the same town in the same year, published these:
- One Shimla hotel: a 100-guest wedding costs Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15 lakh, covering venue rental and the basics.
- One events company: a two-day wedding runs Rs 8 lakh to Rs 15 lakh for a simple event, Rs 20 lakh to Rs 35 lakh for a proper one.
- A Kufri resort: the Shimla and Kufri belt runs Rs 8 lakh to Rs 25 lakh for 50 to 150 guests, with a two-day 50-guest event near Rs 6 lakh to Rs 8 lakh.
- A Shimla planner: Rs 30 lakh is the minimum for 100 guests over two nights, including stay and food.
The last one is not an outlier and it is not a hard sell. It is describing a different product. The Rs 8 to 15 lakh numbers are a venue-and-catering figure where guests book and pay for their own rooms. The Rs 30 lakh number is a hosted wedding where you buy the room block for two nights. In a town where guests cannot easily drive themselves in and out, hosting the rooms is often not optional, which is why that number is the more honest one for most out-of-state couples.

What Shimla venues actually charge
Directory listings read in September 2026. One useful signal from WedMeGood: there are only seven venues in and around Shimla in the Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000 per plate band. That is the whole mid-market, and it tells you how thin the supply is.

WedMeGood separately lists a Shimla destination price of about Rs 16.5 lakh, which sits sensibly in the middle of everything above.
The Taj Theog line needs a caveat rather than a number. One planner puts a premium three-day, two-night wedding there at Rs 70 lakh to Rs 1.2 crore, and the property lists 135 rooms and suites, but Taj’s own event pages show its named venues seating around 60 in reception format. A 135-room property with 60-seat function rooms is a real tension, and it means the outdoor space is doing the work. Get the seated capacity of each space in writing. The four belts, and which one you actually want
Shimla town
Heritage character, the Mall, the Ridge, the church. Almost no venue capacity, restricted vehicle access on the Mall, and parking that will define your logistics. Good for a small ceremony and photography. Bad for a 250-guest function.
Kufri, about 16 km out
Higher, colder, snowier, and where a lot of the mid-market resorts sit. This is the belt those Rs 8 to 25 lakh figures describe. Snow in January is a genuine draw and a genuine risk in the same week.
Theog, about 30 km out
Apple country, deodar forest, and the Taj. Quieter than Kufri and further from the Shimla congestion. The default for a high-spend wedding that wants space.
Mashobra and Chail
Mashobra holds Wildflower Hall. Chail, about 45 km out, has the palace and the world’s highest cricket ground, and is the least crowded of the four. Both suit couples who want the hills without the town.
The practical rule: pick the belt first, then the venue. Couples who pick a venue first routinely end up with a beautiful property and a ninety-minute shuttle from where half their guests are sleeping.
Season, and the snow question
- March to June. The peak tourist season and the most reliable weather. Warm days, cool evenings, and the most expensive and congested weeks of the year. Book nine to twelve months out.
- September to November. The best wedding window. Post-monsoon clarity, thinning crowds, softer rates, and the light is at its best.
- December to February. Cold, quiet and cheap, with real snow in Kufri and Theog. Beautiful, and a gamble: heavy snow closes the Shimla approach roads and strands guests. If you want a snow wedding, budget the heating and accept the risk in writing with your venue.
- July and August. Monsoon. Himachal has serious landslide and road-closure risk in this window. Not a wedding season.

Getting guests to Shimla
Chandigarh is the practical gateway at about 115 km, roughly three and a half to four hours up the ghat. Shimla’s own airport at Jubbarhatti has very limited connectivity and should not be your plan for a guest list. Delhi is about 350 km and seven to eight hours.
The Kalka to Shimla railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, climbs the last stretch on narrow gauge through 100-plus tunnels. It is a wonderful thing to put in an itinerary and far too slow and too small to move a wedding. Use it for the couple and a few guests, not the baraat.
Most weddings run coaches from Chandigarh. Confirm vehicle sizes against the specific approach: the roads narrow considerably above Solan, and the Mall Road area has vehicle restrictions that will affect where guests can be dropped. Where Shimla budgets go wrong
Comparing a venue-only quote to a hosted-rooms quote. The 3x disagreement above is entirely this. Ask every venue for one all-in number at your real guest count, with the room block included, and compare only those.
Assuming the town has venues. Seven venues in the whole Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000 band. If your dates are in May, that supply is gone early.
Not costing winter heating. A December date looks cheap until you price heating an open lawn at 2,200 metres. It usually erases the off-peak discount.

Who Shimla is right for
It is right for a Delhi, Chandigarh or Punjab family with 80 to 250 guests who want colonial hill character and are willing to run a road-first travel plan. It is right in September to November. It is right if you want heritage rather than a resort.
It is wrong in monsoon, wrong for a 400-guest single-property wedding, and wrong if you need certainty in January, when snow can close the approach.
