Thekkady sits at about 900 metres in the Cardamom Hills of Idukki district, on the edge of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. Kumily is the town, Thekkady is the sanctuary gateway, and in practice the names are used interchangeably. Cardamom, pepper, coffee and tea grow on every slope, and the smell of the place is the thing guests remember.

It completes Kerala’s hill set on this site alongside Munnar, Wayanad and the backwater markets at Alleppey and Kumarakom. Of the four hill options it is the smallest and the most specific: a two-day wedding for 80 to 200 people who want plantation country and a wildlife morning, not a resort with a view.

Be clear-eyed about scale. Tripadvisor lists 45 resorts in Thekkady, but the number that can seat a real wedding dinner is a small fraction of that. This is not a 400-guest destination and no amount of shortlisting will make it one.

The tiger reserve, and what it means for your schedule

This is the part that makes Thekkady different from every other market in this batch, and it is not a formality.

Periyar is a tiger reserve and a national park. The venues sit on its edge, some very close. That produces real, enforceable constraints: amplified sound at night is restricted near the reserve boundary and some properties will hold you to a hard cut-off, fireworks are effectively out, bright directional lighting pointed towards the forest is discouraged, and drone flight over or near the park needs permission that is not casually granted.

None of this ruins a wedding. It does mean a Thekkady sangeet ends earlier than a Delhi one, and a DJ brief that assumes music until two in the morning will collide with the contract. Ask each property for its sound cut-off time in writing at shortlist stage, because it varies with distance from the boundary and it is the single most common source of disappointment here.

What you get in exchange is genuinely special. The early-morning boat cruise on Periyar Lake is one of the best guest activities available at any Indian wedding destination, and a bamboo rafting or nature walk slot for the guests who want it fills the day between functions without anyone organising anything elaborate.

How a two-day Thekkady wedding runs

The shape that works here builds the schedule around the sanctuary rather than fighting it, and it produces a better wedding than trying to run a city timetable in a forest.

Day one, midday. Guests arrive from Madurai or Kochi having travelled that morning or the night before. Late lunch, plantation walk, nothing formal. The spice estate tour is fifteen minutes from most properties and fills the afternoon without anyone arranging much.

Day one, evening. Mehendi and sangeet, scheduled to finish inside the venue’s sound cut-off rather than against it. This is the function to compress: start at six rather than eight, and the earlier finish stops feeling like a restriction.

Day two, dawn. The Periyar Lake boat cruise for any guest who wants it. It runs early, it is genuinely beautiful, and it gives the guests who are not in the wedding party something memorable to do while the couple is being dressed.

Day two, late morning. Ceremony. Kerala and Tamil muhurtham timings frequently fall in the morning, which suits both the light and the schedule here.

Day two, evening. Reception, again inside the cut-off. Cardamom hills at dusk with the mist coming down needs very little decor to work.

The pattern to avoid is the Delhi timetable: functions starting at nine at night and running past midnight. It collides with the reserve rules, it wastes the best hours of a Thekkady day, and it means your guests see nothing of the reason you brought them here.

Season

• October to March. The wedding window. Cool, dry, and the plantations at their best. December and January are the tourist peak with the firmest rates and the best weather.
• April and May. Warmer and humid, with pre-monsoon showers building. Good value, and wildlife sightings are often better as animals come to the water.
• June to September. Southwest monsoon, heavy and sustained in the Cardamom Hills, with the ghat roads difficult. Not a wedding window.
• October and November. Northeast monsoon tapering. Workable with a covered contingency for every outdoor function.

Thekkady is cooler than the Kerala plains year-round, which is the reason the plantations are here, but it is not cold in the way Shimla is. You will not need heating. You will need cover.

Logistics

Madurai airport is the nearest at roughly 140 km and about four hours. Cochin is about 190 km and four to five hours. Kottayam is the nearest useful railhead at about 115 km.

Both approaches climb through the ghats, and both are slower than the distance suggests. For a Kerala or Tamil Nadu guest list this is manageable. For anyone flying long-haul it is a second leg on an already long journey, so build a buffer day and say so honestly in the invitation. Thekkady or Munnar, the question most Kerala couples actually ask

They are about 100 km apart in the same district and get shortlisted together constantly. The split is cleaner than it looks.

Altitude and climate. Munnar sits near 1,600 metres and is genuinely cool, cool enough that evening functions from November onward want heating. Thekkady is around 900 metres and merely pleasant. If your guest list includes elderly relatives who will be uncomfortable in the cold, Thekkady is the kinder choice.

The setting. Munnar is sculpted tea, open slopes, long views. Thekkady is cardamom and spice under forest canopy, closed in and green. Munnar photographs more dramatically. Thekkady smells better and feels more private.

Guest activity. Thekkady wins clearly. The Periyar boat cruise, the plantation tours and the bamboo rafting give guests a real programme. Munnar’s tea slopes are largely private plantation land, so the equivalent access needs permission.

Restrictions. Thekkady’s sanctuary sound limits are firmer than anything in Munnar. If a late sangeet matters to your family, that is a genuine mark against it.

Access. Roughly even and both awkward, at about four hours from the nearest useful airport.

Where Thekkady budgets go wrong

Planning a guest list the town cannot sleep. The recurring constraint across this batch, and acute here. Quality room inventory is limited and in December it is committed to tourists a long way out. A 250-guest wedding needs rooms blocked twelve months ahead across several properties, plus a shuttle plan.
