A Wayanad wedding costs roughly Rs 12 lakh to Rs 40 lakh for 150 to 300 guests. Per-plate rates span Rs 300 at Green Gates to Rs 10,000 at Vythiri, and Sterling Wayanad takes up to 1,000 guests at about Rs 800 a plate. It is the only Western Ghats market that scales to a large guest list without leaving the hills.
Kerala’s hill market that actually holds a big wedding
Wayanad sits at roughly 700 to 2,100 metres in the Western Ghats of northern Kerala, a plateau of coffee, pepper, cardamom and rice terraces between the Nilgiris and the Karnataka border. It is greener than Ooty, quieter than Coorg, and it has something neither of them has in quantity: resorts with real capacity.
Sterling Wayanad is listed at 200 to 1,000 guests. Sterling Lontano lists 1,000. Green Gates takes 200 to 900. In a batch of destinations where the honest answer is usually “hold it under 200”, Wayanad is the exception, and that single fact should drive a lot of shortlists.
The live comparison on this site is Coorg, which argues the two against each other directly. The short version of that argument, from the Wayanad side, is below.
What a Wayanad wedding costs in 2026
Directory listings read September 2026. The range is enormous and, as in Coorg, it is real rather than sloppy.
| Venue | Per plate | Capacity | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Green Gates Hotel | From Rs 300 | 200 to 900 | The volume and value end |
| Windflower Resorts and Spa, Vythiri | Rs 600 | Mid-size | Value with resort service |
| Sterling Wayanad | Rs 800 | 200 to 1,000 | Also quoted near Rs 10 lakh per day as a buyout |
| Sterling Lontano Wayanad | From Rs 1,500 | Up to 1,000 | The upper mainstream tier |
| Taj Wayanad Resort and Spa | Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500 | 50 to 200 | Rs 22.5 to 25 lakh per day packaged |
| Vythiri Resort | Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 indicative | Intimate | Exclusivity pricing |
A Kerala planner puts the state’s destination weddings above Rs 15 to 20 lakh typically and Rs 30 to 40 lakh for larger events, and a Reddit thread of Kerala couples puts a 150 to 200 guest Wayanad wedding at Rs 8 lakh to Rs 15 lakh for the main event. Both are consistent with the table once you decide whether rooms are hosted.
The Vythiri figure at Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 a plate is the same structure as Windermere in Munnar: you are buying exclusive use of a rainforest property, and the plate price absorbs the revenue the resort gives up by closing to other guests. It is not a markup on food. See how per-plate pricing works before comparing that against a Rs 800 plate.
Wayanad or Coorg
The two are 100 km apart across the Karnataka border and get compared constantly. The honest split:
- Capacity. Wayanad wins clearly. Sterling Wayanad and Lontano both list up to 1,000. Coorg’s equivalent tier tops out lower outside a full property buyout.
- Luxury depth. Coorg wins. Evolve Back, Taj Madikeri, Amanvana and Coorg Wilderness give it more genuine top-tier options than Wayanad’s Taj and Vythiri.
- Price floor. Wayanad wins. A Rs 300 plate exists here. Coorg’s economy tier starts higher.
- Access. Roughly even and both awkward. Calicut is about 100 km from Wayanad; Coorg is 250 to 280 km from Bengaluru.
- Catchment. Coorg pulls from Bengaluru, Wayanad from Kerala, Calicut, Mysuru and increasingly Bengaluru too.
The practical rule: a 400-guest Ghats wedding goes to Wayanad, a 60-guest luxury one goes to Coorg, and anything in between is a genuine toss-up decided by which property you fall in love with.
The venues, and what each is for
Sterling Wayanad
The workhorse. About Rs 800 a plate with capacity listed from 200 to 1,000, and separately quoted near Rs 10 lakh a day as a full-property arrangement. If your brief is a large Kerala hill wedding at a sane price, this is the first call.
Sterling Lontano Wayanad
From about Rs 1,500 a plate, listed up to 1,000 guests. The step up from Sterling Wayanad in finish rather than in scale, and the two together are why this district holds big weddings at all.
Taj Wayanad Resort and Spa
The brand-name luxury option, at roughly Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500 a plate and a packaged destination price near Rs 22.5 lakh to Rs 25 lakh a day covering rooms, three meals and the venue. Listed at 50 to 200 guests, so this is a high-spend medium wedding rather than a large one.
Vythiri Resort
The rainforest property, with indicative catering at Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 a plate. Treehouses, canopy, and the most distinctive setting in the district. Exclusivity pricing, small guest counts, and the one people photograph.
Green Gates and Windflower Vythiri
The value tier that makes Wayanad unusual. Green Gates from about Rs 300 a plate at 200 to 900 guests, Windflower near Rs 600. A genuine large wedding at a genuinely low rate is possible here in a way it is not in Coorg, Munnar or Ooty.
Wayanad Silverwoods and Morickap
Mid-market properties in the 100 to 300 range. Useful for the mehendi and sangeet when the main function sits elsewhere, or for a complete mid-size wedding on one site.
Season
- October to March. The wedding window. Dry, cool at altitude, the plateau still green from the rains. December to February is the tourist peak with the firmest rates.
- April and May. Warm and humid at the lower elevations, pleasant on the plateau. Good value and rising thunderstorm risk.
- June to September. Southwest monsoon, and Wayanad takes it hard. The district has experienced severe landslide events in this window in recent years. This is categorically not a wedding season, and that is a safety judgement rather than an aesthetic one.
Be firm about the monsoon here. Wayanad’s terrain and rainfall combine badly, and no venue contingency plan substitutes for not scheduling a wedding in it. Our national view is at the best wedding season in India.
Logistics
Calicut, formally Kozhikode, is the nearest airport at roughly 100 km and about three hours by road through the Thamarassery ghat, which has nine hairpin bends and is the constraint on vehicle size. Kannur airport is about 120 km, Mysuru about 130 km, Bengaluru about 280 km.
For a Kerala or Gulf-NRI guest list, Calicut is genuinely convenient and has strong Gulf connectivity, which matters for a state whose diaspora is concentrated there. For a Bengaluru guest list, the drive is long enough that Coorg usually wins. Confirm coach dimensions against the Thamarassery route specifically, and plan a buffer day. See the guest guide.
What guests actually do here, and why it lifts attendance
Wayanad is one of the few destinations in this batch where the surrounding district carries a two-day guest itinerary on its own, and that is worth putting in the invitation rather than leaving guests to discover.
The Edakkal caves hold petroglyphs dating back several thousand years, which is a genuinely rare thing to have twenty minutes from a wedding venue. The Banasura Sagar dam has the reservoir and its islands. Chembra Peak has the heart-shaped lake, Soochipara and Meenmutty have the waterfalls, and the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary adjoins Bandipur and Nagarhole across the border, so a morning safari is realistic for guests who want one.
The district also has a living tribal heritage, with Paniya, Kurichiya and Kuruma communities among others. That is context to be aware of rather than content to decorate with. Cultural performances arranged respectfully through the right channels are welcome at a wedding; costume borrowed as a theme is not, and a good local planner will steer you.
Practically, all of this matters because destination weddings live or die on attendance. A guest weighing a three-hour ghat drive says yes more readily when the invitation shows them what the other two days hold. Our guest guide covers how to present that.
Where Wayanad budgets go wrong
Reading a capacity number as a seated dinner. The 1,000-guest listings describe grounds. Get the seated figure per space, in writing. This is the standing rule across every market in this batch and it bites hardest where the headline numbers are largest.
Comparing a Rs 300 plate to a Rs 5,000 one. Different products entirely. Normalise both to an all-in number at your guest count.
Underbudgeting the wet-weather contingency. Even inside the October to March window, the Ghats produce evening showers. A covered alternative for every outdoor function is a fixed cost here.
Importing vendors without costing it. Decor and production teams come from Calicut or Kochi. Their travel, stay and equipment haulage is a real line. See what a planner costs.
Three worked budgets
| Line item | 100 guests, 2 days | 250 guests, 2 days | 450 guests, 3 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Venue and catering | Rs 4 lakh | Rs 10 lakh | Rs 22 lakh |
| Rooms | Rs 2.5 lakh | Rs 6.5 lakh | Rs 13 lakh |
| Decor and florals | Rs 2.5 lakh | Rs 5.5 lakh | Rs 11 lakh |
| Sound, light, stage | Rs 1.4 lakh | Rs 3 lakh | Rs 6 lakh |
| Transport from Calicut | Rs 1.2 lakh | Rs 2.5 lakh | Rs 4.5 lakh |
| Photo and video | Rs 2 lakh | Rs 3.5 lakh | Rs 5 lakh |
| Wet cover, vendor travel, misc | Rs 1.8 lakh | Rs 4 lakh | Rs 8 lakh |
| Indicative total | Rs 15.4 lakh | Rs 35 lakh | Rs 69.5 lakh |
The 450-guest column is the point of this page. Very few Indian hill destinations can produce that number honestly, and Wayanad is one. Compare it against Kochi, which is the metro alternative for the same guest list, and the Kerala resort roundup for the state-wide picture.
Who Wayanad is right for
It is right for a Kerala, Calicut, Mysuru or Gulf-NRI family with 150 to 450 guests who want the Ghats without a capacity compromise. It is right for a budget-conscious large wedding, because the price floor here is genuinely low. It is right from October to March.
It is wrong in monsoon, without exception. It is wrong if you want the deepest luxury tier, where Coorg is better stocked. And for the smaller, more private Kerala hill wedding, Munnar and Thekkady do that job. The flagship property here is covered at Taj Wayanad Resort and Spa.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a wedding in Wayanad cost?
Roughly Rs 15 lakh for 100 guests over two days, Rs 35 lakh for 250 and Rs 69 lakh for 450 over three days. Per-plate rates span Rs 300 at the value end to Rs 10,000 at an exclusive-use rainforest property.
How many guests can a Wayanad wedding hold?
More than any other Western Ghats market. Sterling Wayanad lists 200 to 1,000, Sterling Lontano up to 1,000 and Green Gates 200 to 900. Treat those as grounds capacity and confirm the seated dinner figure per space in writing.
Is Wayanad or Coorg better for a destination wedding?
Wayanad for capacity and a lower price floor, Coorg for luxury depth. A 400-guest Ghats wedding goes to Wayanad. A 60-guest luxury one goes to Coorg. In between, it comes down to the property.
When is the best time for a Wayanad wedding?
October to March. December to February is the tourist peak with the firmest rates, and October and November offer better value. Avoid June to September entirely: the district has had severe monsoon landslide events and that is a safety call, not a weather preference.
How do guests reach Wayanad?
Calicut airport is about 100 km and roughly three hours via the Thamarassery ghat, which has nine hairpin bends. Kannur is about 120 km, Mysuru 130 km and Bengaluru 280 km. Confirm coach sizes against the ghat route and plan a buffer day.
What is the cheapest wedding venue in Wayanad?
Green Gates Hotel is listed from about Rs 300 per plate for 200 to 900 guests, which is the lowest genuine rate in this market. Windflower Vythiri sits near Rs 600 with resort service on top.
