How 2028 is shaped
The year has two pauses. The first is Kharmas in spring, when the sun is in Pisces: the last date before it is 13 March and the first after it is 14 April. The second is Chaturmas, which in 2028 runs from Devshayani Ekadashi on Sunday 2 July to Devutthana (Prabodhini) Ekadashi on Saturday 28 October; the last date before it is 29 June and the first after it is 30 October. There is also the usual winter pause: the last date of 2028 is 14 December, and the first of 2028 is 15 January, after the Kharmas that runs from mid-December 2027.
That leaves three seasons. Winter and spring (15 January to 13 March) has 28 dates. Summer (14 April to 29 June) has 29. Autumn and early winter (30 October to 14 December) has only 20, which is where the pressure will be.
Dates to look at first
- Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 January: the first dates of the year, both on a weekend, with a day window on the 16th under Uttara Phalguni.
- Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 February: an evening on the 12th and a window from 9:39 am on the 13th into the early hours of the 14th. Expect demand from couples who like the Valentine’s weekend.
- Tuesday 29 February: a leap-day date with a morning window from 6:47 am to 9:23 am under Revati. Anniversaries come round once every four years, which some couples will love and others will not.
- Thursday 27 April: Akshaya Tritiya, one of the most auspicious days of the year, and also a listed date with a window from 7:33 am into the morning of the 28th under Rohini. See our abhujh muhurat guide.
- Friday 19 to Sunday 21 May: three consecutive weekend dates, with an unbroken window from the evening of the 19th into the morning of the 21st under Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati.
- Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 November, Friday 10 and Saturday 11 November, Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 November: three weekend pairs in the first month of the autumn season.
- Friday 1 to Sunday 3 December: three consecutive weekend dates with long windows under Rohini and Mrigashira, the strongest weekend of the year’s end.
Why book 2028 early
Premium palace hotels, the larger city ballrooms and the best-known planners and photographers take bookings well over a year ahead for peak dates, and the weekend dates of November and December are the first to go. With only twenty dates in the autumn season and twelve of them on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, families aiming for late 2028 should fix the date with their priest during 2027 and approach venues soon after. Our booking lead time guide shows how far ahead each vendor type books.

The summer run is long and has many weekend options, but April to June is the hottest part of the year in the north and the monsoon reaches most of India during June. Night windows, air-conditioned venues and hill stations are the usual answers; see our summer wedding guide and hill-station venues guide. School holidays in May and June make it easier for families with children to travel.

The autumn season opens on Monday 30 October, two days after Devutthana Ekadashi, and runs to 14 December. It is the most comfortable weather of the year in most of India and the most expensive time to book.
No dates from July to September 2028
July, August and September 2028 have no listed dates on the North Indian panchang because of Chaturmas. South Indian families follow their own calendars, which allow weddings in some of these months, and civil marriages can be registered at any time. Our Chaturmas guide explains the rule and the regional exceptions, using 2027 as the worked example.
2028 against 2027
2027 has 96 listed dates and 2028 has 77. The difference is almost all in the summer: April to July 2027 has 49 dates, while April to June 2028 has 29, because Chaturmas begins nearly two weeks earlier in 2028 and May 2028 has thirteen dates against eighteen in May 2027. The autumn is similar in both years, eighteen dates in November and December 2027 against twenty from 30 October to 14 December 2028. If your family is choosing between late 2027 and early 2028, compare our December 2027 dates with January and February 2028 above. The full 2026 and 2027 list is on our muhurat dates page.
Regional calendars differ
These are North Indian panchang dates for New Delhi. South Indian families use muhurtham lists from their own calendars, Bengali families the panjika, and many communities consult their own priest’s almanac. Our South Indian muhurtham guide explains the differences, and our guide to how a shubh muhurat is chosen explains what the nakshatra and tithi columns mean.
