Chaturmas 2027 begins on Devshayani Ekadashi, Wednesday 14 July, and ends on Prabodhini Ekadashi, Wednesday 10 November. Drik Panchang lists no Hindu marriage dates for New Delhi between 12 July and 10 November, so August, September and October 2027 have none. The rule is mainly North Indian: Kerala’s Chingam and Tamil Nadu’s Avani are wedding months, and civil, Christian, Muslim and Sikh weddings are not bound by it.

What Chaturmas is
Chaturmas means four months. In the Vaishnava tradition, Vishnu is said to go into yogic sleep on Devshayani (also called Ashadhi or Padma) Ekadashi in the month of Ashadha and to wake on Prabodhini (also called Dev Uthani or Devutthana) Ekadashi in Kartika. The four months between are kept for vows, fasting and religious observance, and auspicious new beginnings such as weddings, thread ceremonies and housewarmings are traditionally deferred until the deity wakes. Practice varies by community and by family, which is why the question is always worth asking your priest rather than assuming.
Searching for August, September or October 2027 dates
If you are looking for marriage dates in August 2027, September 2027 or October 2027 on the North Indian panchang, there are none to find. Pages that list “auspicious dates” in those months are usually listing general good days, not vivah muhurats, or are following a regional calendar. The last North Indian dates before the pause are on our July 2027 page and the first dates after it are on our November 2027 page.
Why the gap matters for planning
The pause shapes the whole year. Families who want a 2027 wedding either marry by mid-July, in the heat and the monsoon, or wait until November, when the season reopens with everyone else who waited. Two consequences follow:
- November and early December are crowded. November 2027 has eleven dates and December seven, and every family that skipped the monsoon is choosing among those eighteen. Venues and vendors for that window book out early.
- The pause is the best time to plan. Vendors are quieter, venues have time for site visits, and decorators and caterers will run tastings and mock-ups they cannot fit in during the season. Couples marrying in November or December 2027 should use August to October for every decision that needs a visit.
South India runs on a different calendar
Chaturmas is observed most strictly in North and Central India. South Indian families plan by their own solar or lunar months, and the picture there is almost the reverse:
- Kerala. Karkidakam, roughly mid-July to mid-August, is avoided. Chingam, which follows from roughly mid-August, opens the Malayalam year and is the busiest wedding month in Kerala, with temples such as Guruvayur hosting very large numbers of weddings on its auspicious days. See our Guruvayur temple wedding guide.
- Tamil Nadu. Aadi, roughly mid-July to mid-August, is traditionally avoided for weddings. Avani, which follows from roughly mid-August, is one of the popular wedding months of the Tamil year.
- Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Telugu families follow the Telugu panchangam, in which Shravana (around August) is a well-used wedding month and Bhadrapada is generally avoided.
So a South Indian family can and often does marry in August or September 2027. Our South Indian muhurtham guide explains how those calendars set dates.
Other observances inside the pause
Several observances that families avoid for weddings fall within these months anyway: Pitru Paksha, the fortnight of ancestor rites in Bhadrapada or Ashvin, and for many families the nine nights of Navratri. Even where a regional calendar allows weddings in September or October, check those fortnights with your priest before booking.
Jain Chaturmas is separate
Jain monks and nuns also observe a Chaturmas, staying in one place through the monsoon, and Jain families defer weddings during it, but the Jain observance is calculated by Jain calendars and its dates do not always match the Hindu one. Families should confirm with their own community’s calendar. Our Jain wedding traditions page covers the ceremony itself.
Weddings that are not bound by Chaturmas
- Civil marriage. A marriage under the Special Marriage Act, 1954 can be registered on any working day; the notice period of 30 days applies whatever the season. Some couples register during the pause and hold the religious ceremony after 10 November. Our court marriage guide explains the process.
- Christian, Muslim and Parsi weddings follow their own calendars, and Sikh Anand Karaj ceremonies are not tied to a muhurat in the same way, though individual families may still prefer to avoid the period.
- Arya Samaj ceremonies. Arya Samaj generally does not follow muhurat restrictions; see our Arya Samaj marriage guide.
Weather and price during the pause
August and September are monsoon months across most of India, and October brings the post-monsoon heat in the plains before the cool season. For couples who are free to marry in these months, the reward is price: hotels and resorts are in their off-season and quote some of their lowest rates of the year. Our monsoon wedding planning guide and off-season wedding guide cover indoor venues, rain plans and negotiating rates.
A planning calendar for the pause
| Month | For a November or December 2027 wedding |
|---|---|
| August 2027 | Site visits to shortlisted venues, decor and lighting mock-ups, photographer and planner meetings |
| September 2027 | Menu tastings, outfit orders, room block confirmed, guest travel booked |
| October 2027 | Invitations out before Diwali on 29 October, jewellery, final vendor contracts |
| Early November 2027 | Final fittings, run sheet, guest numbers to the caterer |
The point of the table is the order, not the exact weeks: every decision that needs you to visit, taste or try something on is easier to make while vendors are not working weddings every weekend.
Engagements, roka and other functions
Families differ on whether smaller functions can be held during Chaturmas. Some hold a roka, a sagai or an engagement in these months and keep only the wedding itself for after Prabodhini Ekadashi; others defer every auspicious function. A reception without religious rites is not bound by a muhurat at all. If you are planning an engagement in August or September 2027, ask both families’ priests early, because the answer on one side is not always the answer on the other. Our sagai ceremony guide covers the engagement itself.
Chaturmas in 2028
For families already looking further ahead: in 2028, Devshayani Ekadashi falls on Sunday 2 July and Devutthana Ekadashi on Saturday 28 October, by Drik Panchang. The last listed date before the pause is 29 June 2028 and the first after it is 30 October 2028. Our 2028 marriage dates page has the full list.
Vendors and venues during the pause
For North Indian vendors, Chaturmas is the low season, and that changes how they work. Many decorators, caterers and photographers use these months for corporate events, smaller functions and South Indian or civil weddings, so they are available for meetings but not idle. Venues are similarly quieter and more willing to discuss packages, complimentary rooms or flexible minimum guarantees for a booking in the following season. If a venue or vendor has a waiting list for November 2027, the pause is often when cancellations from the previous booking round appear, so it is worth asking to be told.
The one thing that does not get easier is the dates themselves. However quiet the vendors are in September, the eighteen dates of November and December 2027 are shared by every family that waited, and the best venues will already be committed for the weekend of 20 and 21 November and for Sunday 12 December.
