Sri Lanka’s wedding venues sit in five regions: the south-west coast around Bentota and Galle, the deep south at Hambantota, Colombo, the cultural triangle around Dambulla, and the east coast at Trincomalee. The largest is Shangri-La Hambantota, whose Grand Ballroom seats 990 for a banquet. The two coasts have opposite dry seasons, so one of them suits almost every month.

The one fact that decides where in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has two monsoons, and they hit opposite coasts at different times of year. The south-west monsoon brings rain to Bentota, Galle and Colombo roughly from May to September, while the east coast around Trincomalee is at its best in exactly those months. The north-east monsoon reverses the picture later in the year. The practical result is that for almost any month you have in mind, one coast of the island is in its dry season.

So the first question for a Sri Lanka wedding is not which resort. It is which month, and therefore which coast. Pick the region to match the date, then the venue to match the guest count.

The five wedding regions, at a glance

RegionBest monthsCharacterSuits
South-west coast: Bentota, Kalutara, GalleDecember to AprilBeach resorts, river and lagoon settings, colonial GalleThe classic beach wedding, 100 to 300 guests
Deep south: HambantotaDecember to AprilLarge resort estates, golf, a quieter coastThe largest guest lists on the island

Cultural triangle: Dambulla, SigiriyaOutside the late-year rainsJungle and lake settings, ancient sites nearbySmaller weddings with a sense of place
East coast: Trincomalee, PasikudahMay to SeptemberCalm bays and wide beachesSummer dates, when the south-west is wet

For the cost side of each region, our Sri Lanka wedding cost guide has the breakdown, and the Sri Lanka destination wedding guide covers the planning from India.

Verified capacities at four key venues

Capacity claims for Sri Lankan resorts vary wildly between listings. These figures come from each operator’s own published event pages or its event-venue listing, so they are the numbers to plan around.

VenueRegionRoomsLargest indoor space
Shangri-La HambantotaDeep south300, including 21 suitesGrand Ballroom: 990 banquet, 1,434 reception
Cinnamon Bentota BeachSouth-west coast159, including 16 themed suitesGrand ballroom: up to 300 guests
Heritance KandalamaCultural triangle152, including 15 suitesMain Hall: 260 banquet, 350 cocktail
Trinco Blu, TrincomaleeEast coastAbout 81Outdoor beach and garden setup: about 200

The pattern is clear: there is one genuinely large-format venue on the island and several excellent mid-size ones. A 500-guest wedding in Sri Lanka effectively means Hambantota. A wedding of 150 to 250 has real choice.

The south-west coast: Bentota, Kalutara and Galle

This is where most Indian weddings in Sri Lanka happen, for good reason. It is the closest beach coast to the international airport, the resort stock is deep, and Indian caterers and decorators already work here. Bentota sits on the river mouth and the lagoon, which gives you a beach ceremony and a calm-water backdrop at the same venue. Galle adds the walled colonial fort town, which is a striking setting for photographs and a welcome evening.

Cinnamon Bentota Beach is the landmark here: a Geoffrey Bawa design from the late 1960s, reopened in December 2019 after a full rebuild, with 159 rooms and a ballroom for up to 300. Our existing guides also cover the wider resort ecosystem on this coast, including the Taj and Anantara properties. Plan December to April; the south-west monsoon makes May to September a gamble for anything outdoors.

The deep south: Hambantota

Hambantota is further from the airport, roughly three hours by expressway, and that distance is the price of the island’s one truly large wedding venue. Shangri-La Hambantota sits on a former coconut plantation with 300 rooms, Sri Lanka’s first resort golf course, and a Grand Ballroom that seats 990 for a banquet. Its outdoor spaces, Upper Lagoon and Gimanhala, each take about 150 for a banquet, which makes it possible to give each function its own setting without leaving the estate.

Hambantota is also one of the Sri Lankan ports on Cordelia’s itineraries, which is relevant if you are considering our cruise and Sri Lanka wedding.

Colombo

Colombo’s five-star hotels are the practical choice for a short trip or a large reception: they are close to the airport, they have big ballrooms, and guests can fly in and out without a long transfer. What Colombo does not offer is the beach or the landscape that makes couples choose Sri Lanka in the first place, so it most often hosts a reception for a wider guest list after a smaller wedding on the coast.

The cultural triangle: Dambulla and Sigiriya

Inland, between the ancient cities, the setting changes completely: jungle, lakes and rock. Heritance Kandalama, another Geoffrey Bawa building, is set into a rock face beside the Kandalama reservoir, with 152 rooms and a Main Hall for 260 at a banquet. It is roughly four hours by road from the airport, so it suits a smaller wedding where the guests are coming for the place as much as the party. The region’s rains come late in the year, so it pairs well with the east coast’s season.

The east coast: Trincomalee and Pasikudah

The east coast is Sri Lanka’s answer to a summer wedding. From May to September, when the south-west is wet, Trincomalee’s bays are calm and dry. Trinco Blu is a beach resort of about 81 rooms with an outdoor setup for around 200 guests, which is the right scale for most weddings here. The coast’s trade-off is access: it is a long drive from Colombo, and the resort stock is thinner than in the south-west.

Trincomalee is also on Cordelia’s Sri Lanka itineraries, alongside Hambantota.

Matching guest count to region

Guest countRealistic regionsWhy
Up to 100Any regionEvery region has resorts that can house and host this size
100 to 250South-west coast, cultural triangle, east coastThe mid-size resorts’ ballrooms and lawns fit this band
250 to 400South-west coast at the largest resorts, Hambantota, ColomboRooms run short elsewhere
500 and aboveHambantota, or Colombo for a receptionOnly one ballroom on the island seats this many for dinner

Room count matters as much as the ballroom. A venue that can seat 300 but sleeps 150 guests means a second hotel and shuttles for every function. Count beds before you fall for a lawn.

Combining two regions in one wedding

Because the distances are short, some families split the wedding across two places. The most common pattern is a beach ceremony at Bentota followed by a larger reception in a Colombo ballroom on the way back to the airport, which lets a smaller group enjoy the coast while the wider circle joins only for the reception. Another is a welcome evening inside Galle’s fort walls before a ceremony at a resort further down the coast. Each split adds a transfer day, so it suits a wedding of four days or more rather than a three-day format.

Getting a shortlist you can actually book

Choose the month, then the coast, then two or three venues whose rooms and largest space both fit your list. Then ask each venue the same five questions: whether open flame is permitted for the havan, whether outside Indian caterers are allowed, the sound cut-off for the sangeet, the minimum room block, and what a full buyout costs. Comparing answers side by side is quicker than comparing brochures. If you would like us to do it, send us your month and guest count.

Getting guests to each region

Almost every international guest lands at Bandaranaike International Airport, north of Colombo, so every region’s real cost includes the road transfer from there. That transfer is the hidden variable in a Sri Lanka wedding: a venue two hours away and a venue four hours away can look identical on paper and feel very different to an aunt who has just flown in.

RegionApproximate road time from the main airportWhat that means for the plan
ColomboUnder an hour, traffic permittingGuests can land and attend the same evening
Bentota and KalutaraAbout two hoursArrive the day before the first function
GalleAbout two and a half hoursSame, with a longer coach for older guests
HambantotaAbout three hours by expresswayPlan the arrival day as a travel day
Dambulla and KandalamaAbout four hoursAllow a full travel day each way
TrincomaleeLonger stillBest when guests come by sea, as on our cruise format

Book coaches rather than leaving guests to taxis, stagger arrivals so that the first function is not waiting on the last flight, and put the elderly and the immediate family on the earliest transfers. These three habits matter more to how the wedding feels than any choice of decor.

Venue rules Indian weddings run into in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan resorts host Indian weddings regularly, but five questions are worth asking every venue in writing before you sign.

  • The sacred fire. Indoor ballrooms often restrict open flame. If the havan is non-negotiable, confirm the outdoor or covered space it will use and the permission it needs.
  • Indian catering. The large resort groups have Indian chefs; smaller properties bring in a caterer from Colombo. Ask which applies and what it adds per guest.
  • Full-moon days. Sri Lanka’s Poya days, one each lunar month, restrict alcohol sales nationwide. Our Sri Lanka destination wedding guide explains how resorts handle it; check the calendar before you fix the date.
  • Sound. Beach resorts sit near villages and other hotels, so ask for the cut-off time for amplified music at the sangeet.
  • The room block. Ask for the minimum block, the release date for unused rooms, and the price of a full buyout on your dates.

A sample three-day plan at a single venue

At a resort with several distinct spaces, the whole wedding can happen without a single coach transfer after arrival. Using Shangri-La Hambantota’s published spaces as an example:

DayFunctionSpace
Day 1 eveningWelcome dinnerAn outdoor space such as Gimanhala, about 150 at a banquet
Day 2 morningHaldi and mehendiUpper Lagoon, about 150 at a banquet
Day 2 eveningSangeetThe Grand Ballroom, divided to the guest count
Day 3Pheras and receptionAn outdoor ceremony, then the Grand Ballroom

The same structure works at Bentota or Kandalama with smaller numbers. What changes is how many spaces the venue has, which is why the number of distinct event spaces is worth comparing alongside the size of the largest one.
