Velvet Knot’s cruise wedding combines one night aboard a Cordelia cruise, with a welcome evening and cocktails under the stars, and one night in Sri Lanka, where the haldi and the pheras take place on the day you arrive. You fly home on day three. Sailing dates and ports are confirmed on enquiry, and the marriage is registered in India.
The format, day by day
Most destination weddings ask guests for four or five days and a long flight. This one asks for three days, and it turns the journey itself into the first function. The idea is simple: the welcome evening happens at sea, and the wedding happens on arrival.
| Day | Where you are | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | On board the Cordelia cruise | Check-in and welcome on board, then cocktails under the stars on deck. The night is spent at sea. |
| Day 2 | A port in Sri Lanka | Arrival in Sri Lanka, the haldi, and the pheras or wedding ceremony. The night is spent in a hotel in Sri Lanka. |
| Day 3 | Departure | Check-out from the hotel and travel back to India. |
Two nights, two settings, and a wedding that nobody on the guest list will confuse with any other they have attended. The cruise does the work that a sangeet or welcome dinner does at a conventional destination wedding: it gathers everyone in one place, away from their phones and their errands, the evening before the ceremony.
What we confirm when you enquire
This is a new format from October 2026, and we confirm the details for each wedding individually rather than publishing a fixed itinerary. When you enquire, we come back with:
- The sailing. Which departure and which Sri Lankan port fit your dates, and the timings on board and on arrival.
- The cabins. How many staterooms your guest list needs, and which categories, from interior cabins to suites.
- The wedding venue in Sri Lanka. Where the haldi and pheras happen on day two, and the hotel for the second night.
- The journey home. How guests travel back to India on day three.
- The full cost. One itemised figure for your guest count, rather than a per-head headline that leaves out the expensive parts.
We do not publish a price for this package because the two biggest lines, cabins and the return journey, move with the sailing date and with how many guests you bring. Tell us your preferred month and your guest count and we will send the itinerary and the number together.
Who this format suits
A cruise wedding is not the right answer for every family, and it is better to know that before you fall for the photographs.
| It suits you if | Think twice if |
|---|---|
| You want an intimate wedding with your closest family and friends | Your guest list runs into several hundred and everyone must come |
| You would rather your guests spent three days than five | You want four or five separate functions with their own settings |
| The journey itself appeals: a welcome night at sea is the point | Several elderly guests are uneasy at sea or on long transfers |
| Everyone in the family holds a valid passport, or can get one in time | Some guests do not have passports and cannot get them before the date |
The format is at its best for couples who want a wedding that feels like an event in itself rather than a scaled-down version of a big one. A mehendi and a sangeet can still happen at home before you travel; the cruise then carries the welcome, and Sri Lanka carries the ceremony.
The welcome night at sea
Day one is about arriving together. Guests board, settle into their cabins and then gather for cocktails under the stars, which is the evening that sets the tone for the whole wedding. It works as an introduction between the two families as much as a celebration, because for once nobody is leaving early to beat the traffic.
Plan this evening the way you would plan a welcome dinner. Decide in advance who speaks and when, whether there is music the families have chosen, and what the dress code is. Keep it relaxed and keep it early enough that everyone is fresh for a wedding day that starts with arrival in port.
The wedding day in Sri Lanka
Day two carries two functions, which means it needs a clear run sheet. The haldi suits the morning: it is informal, it is outdoors, and turmeric is easier to deal with before anyone is dressed for the ceremony. The pheras follow later in the day, once the couple and the family have bathed, dressed and rested.
Three things decide whether the day runs smoothly:
- The arrival time. Everything on day two is built backwards from when guests are ashore and checked in. We plan the haldi start from that time, not from an ideal one.
- The priest and the fire. Decide early whether your family priest travels with you or whether a priest is arranged in Sri Lanka, and confirm that the venue permits the sacred fire for the pheras. Many hotels have rules on open flame indoors, so an outdoor or covered terrace setting is often the answer.
- The muhurat. If your family’s priest has fixed a muhurat, the sailing has to fit it rather than the other way round. Share the date and time window when you enquire.
Sri Lanka is a natural fit for a Hindu wedding. Its own Tamil Hindu community, its temples and its coastline make it feel familiar to Indian families, and its food culture is close enough that a vegetarian wedding menu is not a special request.
Is the wedding legally valid?
The pheras in Sri Lanka are your wedding in every sense that matters to your family. For the paperwork, though, plan to register the marriage in India, and here is why.
Sri Lanka’s Registrar General’s Department asks for a period of residence in the area before a notice of marriage is handed over, and then a 14-day wait after the notice unless a special licence is granted. A single night in the country cannot meet that. So the clean route is to register in India, either before you travel or after you return. Our guide to whether a Sri Lanka wedding is legally valid for Indian couples walks through both routes, and the Special Marriage Act guide covers the registration itself.
Passports, entry and what guests need to carry
This is an international journey, so every guest, including children, needs a valid passport. Indian nationals currently receive a free 30-day Electronic Travel Authorization for Sri Lanka, which must be applied for online before travel through the official ETA site; the scheme was extended to more countries, with India still on the list, from 25 May 2026. Ask guests to apply once the dates are fixed rather than the week before.
Outfits are the other thing to plan for. Guests are carrying wedding clothes for two functions plus clothes for the cruise, in luggage that has to move from ship to hotel. A short packing note sent with the invitation, covering what to wear on deck, for the haldi and for the pheras, saves a great deal of anxiety on the day.
A cruise wedding against a conventional Sri Lanka wedding
| Question | Cruise and Sri Lanka | A conventional Sri Lanka wedding |
|---|---|---|
| Days guests give | Three | Usually four to five |
| Number of functions | Welcome evening, haldi, pheras | As many as you want, often four or five |
| Guest count | Intimate, set by cabins and the venue | Up to several hundred at the large resorts |
| The welcome evening | At sea, under the stars | At the resort |
| Legal registration | In India | In India, or in Sri Lanka if you stay long enough |
If you need the bigger format, our Sri Lanka wedding cost guide and guide to Sri Lanka wedding venues cover resort weddings across the island, and the Sri Lanka destination wedding guide covers planning from India.
How to start
Send us three things: the month you are aiming for, your approximate guest count, and whether a muhurat has been fixed. We will check the sailings that fit, hold the cabins you need, and come back with the itinerary, the wedding venue in Sri Lanka and one itemised cost. Request your cruise wedding plan here.
A planning timeline for a cruise wedding
Because cabins on a sailing are finite, the order of decisions matters more than it does for a resort wedding. A resort can usually find another ten rooms; a ship on a given date cannot.
| When | What to settle |
|---|---|
| 4 to 6 months before | The month, the muhurat if you follow one, and an honest guest count. We match these to a sailing and hold the cabins. |
| 3 to 4 months before | Confirm the cabin list by name, the wedding venue in Sri Lanka and the hotel for the second night. Send invitations with passport and ETA guidance. |
| 6 to 8 weeks before | Guests apply for the Sri Lanka ETA. Finalise the haldi and pheras run sheet, the priest, the decor and the menu. |
| 2 weeks before | Share the final schedule, packing note and contact list with every guest. Confirm transfers on arrival and on day three. |
| The week of the wedding | Collect documents, outfits and ritual items into labelled bags that travel with the family, not in the hold. |
What goes into the cost
Since the package is quoted on request, it helps to know what the quote is built from, so you can compare it fairly with a conventional destination wedding. There are six lines, and the first two carry most of the weight.
- Cabins, priced by category and by the number of guests sharing each one.
- The journey home on day three for every guest.
- The hotel night in Sri Lanka, usually a block of rooms near the wedding venue.
- The wedding day: haldi and pheras setup, the mandap, flowers, the priest and the sacred fire.
- Food and drink on the wedding day in Sri Lanka, beyond what the cruise includes.
- Photography and film across both settings, which needs a team that travels with you.
Our quote lists each of these separately, so you can see where a smaller cabin category or a shorter guest list changes the total.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Cordelia cruise and Sri Lanka wedding?
A three-day wedding format: one night aboard a Cordelia cruise with a welcome evening and cocktails under the stars, then arrival in Sri Lanka on day two for the haldi and the pheras, a night in a Sri Lankan hotel, and the journey home on day three.
How much does a cruise wedding to Sri Lanka cost?
The cost is quoted on request because the largest lines, cabins and the return journey, depend on the sailing date and your guest count. Share your month and guest count and we send one itemised figure with the itinerary.
Is a wedding in Sri Lanka legally valid in India?
A Hindu ceremony in Sri Lanka is your wedding, but for legal paperwork you should register the marriage in India, before you travel or after you return. Registering in Sri Lanka requires a residence period before the notice and a 14-day wait or a special licence, which a one-night stay cannot meet.
Do guests need a visa for Sri Lanka?
Indian nationals currently get a free 30-day Electronic Travel Authorization, applied for online before travel. Every guest, including children, needs a valid passport for the cruise and for entry to Sri Lanka.
Can we have a havan and the sacred fire for the pheras in Sri Lanka?
Yes, with planning. Confirm in advance that the venue permits an open flame, which usually means an outdoor or covered terrace setting, and decide whether your family priest travels with you or a priest is arranged locally.
