Shangri-La Hambantota is the only Sri Lankan resort built for a large Indian wedding: 300 rooms and a Grand Ballroom that seats 990 for a banquet and 1,434 for a reception. On our Sri Lanka planning band of Rs 30,000 to Rs 55,000 per guest, a 300-guest wedding lands around Rs 90 lakh to Rs 1.65 crore, with this resort at the upper end of the band.
Why Shangri-La Hambantota stands apart
Most Sri Lankan resorts are built for couples on holiday, not for 400 wedding guests. Shangri-La Hambantota is the exception. It opened in June 2016 on a 145-acre former coconut plantation on the south coast, with 300 rooms including 21 suites, the country’s first resort golf course, and a ballroom large enough for the biggest Indian guest lists. For a family that wants Sri Lanka and also wants everyone invited, it is effectively the only option on the island.
That singularity is its strength and its limitation. It is the one place where a 500-guest wedding works, so its best dates go early, and its distance from the airport means guests need to treat arrival as a travel day.
The event spaces and what each holds
These are the resort’s own published capacities.
| Space | Banquet | Reception | Theatre | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Ballroom | 990 | 1,434 | 1,400 | 1,232 square metres, 6.78 metre ceiling |
| Upper Lagoon | 150 | 150 | 200 | Outdoor setting by the lagoon |
| Gimanhala | 150 | 150 | 100 | Outdoor setting |
| Badulla | 40 | 90 | 70 | Indoor function room |
| Kandy, Haatton, Haputale, Nuwara Eliya | 40 each | 70 each | 60 each | Indoor function rooms |
The ballroom carries the big evenings: the sangeet and the reception. The two outdoor spaces carry the daytime functions and a welcome dinner, and the smaller rooms make good family lounges, a bridal suite for getting ready, or a quiet space for elders between functions.
Wedding cost by guest count
No Sri Lankan resort publishes a rate card for an Indian wedding, so the figures below apply our published Sri Lanka planning band of Rs 30,000 to Rs 55,000 per guest, all-in, to each guest count. They are planning estimates, not quotes. Shangri-La Hambantota sits toward the upper end of that band, because of its scale, its five-star positioning and the transfers its location requires.
| Guests | Estimate across the band | Where this resort usually lands |
|---|---|---|
| 150 | Rs 45 lakh to Rs 82.5 lakh | Upper half of the range |
| 300 | Rs 90 lakh to Rs 1.65 crore | Upper half of the range |
| 500 | Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 2.75 crore | Upper half; few other venues can host this |

What moves the cost here
- The room block. With 300 rooms, a 500-guest wedding can house almost everyone on the estate at double occupancy, which is unusual. The room block will be the largest single line.
- Exclusivity. A wedding that takes the Grand Ballroom and both outdoor spaces across three days is close to a full takeover. Ask what a buyout costs; it may be close to the price of a large partial booking.
- Indian catering. Ask whether Indian chefs are on staff for your dates or whether a specialist caterer is brought in, and what that adds per guest.
- Transfers. Coaches for every guest from the airport and back, across a three-hour drive each way, are a real line and should be in the budget from the start.
- Season. Peak winter dates command the highest rates; shoulder weeks are where terms are easiest to negotiate.
Getting there
Guests land at Bandaranaike International Airport near Colombo and travel south by expressway, about three hours by road. Hambantota is also one of the Sri Lankan ports on Cordelia’s cruise itineraries, which is relevant if you are considering our cruise and Sri Lanka wedding. For a large wedding, plan the arrival day as a travel day with a light welcome in the evening, rather than a full function.
Season
The south coast is at its best from December to April, which is when most Indian weddings here are held and when the resort is busiest. Outside that window, ask the resort how its outdoor spaces are used in the rain and confirm a covered fallback for every outdoor function. Our Sri Lanka venues guide explains why the island’s two coasts have opposite seasons.
Running an Indian wedding here
Three practical points decide how well a large Indian wedding runs at this resort.
The sacred fire. Indoor ballrooms commonly restrict open flame, so plan the pheras outdoors, at the lagoon or a garden setting, and confirm the permission in writing. Have a covered option agreed in case of rain.
Sound and timing. A large sangeet in the Grand Ballroom is well contained, but ask the cut-off time for amplified music, especially for any outdoor function.
Full-moon days. Sri Lanka’s Poya days restrict alcohol sales. Check the calendar before fixing dates; our Sri Lanka destination wedding guide covers how resorts handle it.
A three-day plan on the estate
| When | Function | Space |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 evening | Welcome dinner after the transfer | Gimanhala |
| Day 2 morning | Haldi and mehendi | Upper Lagoon |
| Day 2 evening | Sangeet | Grand Ballroom |
| Day 3 | Pheras outdoors, reception in the evening | A garden or lagoon setting, then the Grand Ballroom |
Nobody boards a coach between arrival and departure, which for a large guest list is worth a great deal.
How it compares with other south-coast options
| If you want | Look at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The largest possible guest list | Shangri-La Hambantota | The only ballroom on the island seating close to 1,000 |
| A shorter transfer from the airport | Cinnamon Bentota Beach | About two hours from the airport, with a ballroom for 300 |
| A summer date | Trinco Blu, Trincomalee | The east coast is dry from May to September |
| Jungle rather than beach | Heritance Kandalama | Bawa architecture above a reservoir near Sigiriya |
A booking timeline for Shangri-La Hambantota
| When | What to lock |
|---|---|
| 9 to 12 months before | The dates, the Grand Ballroom and outdoor spaces, and the core room block; peak winter dates go first at a venue with no rival at this size |
| 6 months before | The room block by family group, the menu direction, and the priest and ritual plan |
| 3 months before | Decor, photography and transfers; invitations go out with passport and ETA guidance |
| 6 weeks before | Guests apply for the Sri Lanka ETA; final guest list and room allocation |
| 2 weeks before | Run sheet shared with the venue, the families and every vendor |
Who should book it, and who should not
Book Shangri-La Hambantota if your guest list is 300 or more and Sri Lanka is the destination: there is no real alternative on the island. It also suits smaller weddings that want a self-contained estate with golf and space for older guests. If your list is under 150 and you want a beach-town feel, the south-west coast around Cinnamon Bentota Beach is closer to the airport and more intimate. And if 300 guests is the requirement but Sri Lanka is negotiable, our Sri Lanka vs Thailand vs Bali comparison explains why Thailand has more options at that size.
Keeping 300 guests busy between functions
A large wedding at a remote estate succeeds or fails on the hours between functions. Guests who have flown in for three days need something to do that is not sitting by the pool waiting for the sangeet, and Hambantota is well placed for it.
- Golf. The resort’s own course was Sri Lanka’s first resort golf course, an obvious morning for the uncles and a gift for any guests who play.
- Bundala National Park. A wetland reserve close to Hambantota, known for its water birds, including flamingos in season. An easy half-day outing.
- Yala National Park. Sri Lanka’s best-known wildlife park, about an hour and a half east by road, for families who want a leopard safari before or after the wedding.
- The beach and the estate. On 145 acres, simply walking the grounds, the lagoon and the shore fills a quiet afternoon for older guests.
Schedule outings on the morning of day two, before the haldi, or as an extension after the reception. Keep the afternoon of the wedding day free; people need time to rest and dress.
Who sleeps where
With 300 rooms, including 21 suites, the room plan here is about allocation rather than shortage. A sensible split gives the 21 suites to the couple, both sets of parents, grandparents and the families’ most senior guests, then allocates the remaining rooms by family group so that relatives are near one another. Hold a small number of rooms back until the final fortnight for late changes, and agree the release date for unused rooms in the contract.
For a wedding of 500, almost everyone fits on the estate at double occupancy, but children, single travellers and elderly guests who prefer their own room will push the count up. Count beds by name before you count heads.
Photographs on the estate
The resort’s strength for photography is variety within walking distance: the lagoon at Upper Lagoon for the haldi, the beach at golden hour for portraits, the gardens for family groups, and the scale of the Grand Ballroom for the reception. Agree with your photographer which settings are used at which hour, because the south coast’s light is strong at midday and best early and late.
