Cinnamon Bentota Beach is a Geoffrey Bawa resort between the Bentota river and the Indian Ocean, rebuilt and reopened in December 2019, with 159 rooms and a grand ballroom for up to 300 guests. On our Sri Lanka planning band of Rs 30,000 to Rs 55,000 per guest, a 200-guest wedding lands around Rs 60 lakh to Rs 1.1 crore.

The resort, and why it suits a wedding

Cinnamon Bentota Beach is one of the most celebrated buildings in Sri Lankan hospitality. The architect Geoffrey Bawa designed the original Bentota Beach Hotel, built between 1967 and 1969, and it became a reference point for the tropical modernist style he is known for: open courtyards, framed views and buildings that let the landscape in. The hotel closed in 2017 for a full reconstruction and reopened in December 2019 after a refurbishment of LKR 4.9 billion.

For a wedding, that history gives you something most beach resorts cannot: a setting with genuine architectural character, between the river and the sea, rather than a generic resort lawn. It is also on the south-west coast, the closest beach region to Sri Lanka’s main airport and the coast most Indian weddings on the island use.

The sixteen suites are each themed and named after elements of Sri Lanka’s coast and culture, which makes them natural rooms for the couple, both sets of parents and the families’ elders. With 159 rooms, the resort can house a wedding of about 300 guests at double occupancy, which matches its ballroom: a useful alignment, because many resorts can seat more guests than they can sleep.

Wedding cost by guest count

No Sri Lankan resort publishes a rate card for an Indian wedding, so the figures below apply our published Sri Lanka planning band of Rs 30,000 to Rs 55,000 per guest, all-in, to each guest count. They are planning estimates, not quotes. Cinnamon Bentota Beach sits around the middle of the band: a premium resort, but on the coast where Indian weddings are most established and transfers are shortest.

Our Sri Lanka wedding cost guide breaks the per-guest band into its parts. For a costed plan against the resort’s proposal for your dates, tell us your guest count and month.

What drives the final number

  • How much of the resort you take. At 300 guests you are using most of the rooms; at that point, ask what exclusive use would cost.
  • The menu. Ask whether Indian chefs are available for your dates or a specialist caterer is brought in from Colombo, and whether a Jain line can be run separately.
  • The setting for each function. Beach and garden functions need more decor and power than the ballroom; the ballroom needs more decor to stop it looking like any ballroom.
  • The date. December to April is peak season on this coast, and the busiest weeks command the highest rates.

Getting there

Bentota is about two hours by road from Bandaranaike International Airport, which makes it one of the easiest beach venues on the island for a wedding. Guests landing in the morning can be at the resort by lunch, and a welcome evening on arrival day is realistic. Galle’s colonial fort town is further down the same coast and makes an excellent setting for a pre-wedding outing or photographs.

Season

The south-west coast’s dry season runs from December to April, and that is when to hold a beach or garden wedding here. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings rain to this coast, so outdoor functions become a gamble and the ballroom becomes the plan. If your date falls in those months, consider the east coast instead; our Sri Lanka venues guide explains the two-coast pattern.

Running an Indian wedding here

The river and the beach give you two very different ceremony settings at one resort. A riverside or garden mandap is calmer and easier to light; a beach mandap is more dramatic but depends on wind and tide timing, so take the resort’s advice on the hour. Confirm the open-flame permission for the havan in writing, agree a covered fallback for every outdoor function, and check the cut-off time for music at the sangeet.

Sri Lanka’s Poya days, one each lunar month, restrict alcohol sales; our Sri Lanka destination wedding guide covers how resorts handle them, so check before fixing the date.

Who should book it

Cinnamon Bentota Beach suits a wedding of 100 to 300 guests that wants a beach setting with architectural character and short transfers. If your list is larger, Shangri-La Hambantota is the island’s large-format option. If your date is between May and September, look at the east coast and Trinco Blu. If you want a jungle setting rather than a beach, Heritance Kandalama is the other Bawa landmark.

The rebuild, and what it means for a wedding

The resort that hosts weddings today is not simply the 1960s hotel. It closed in 2017, fifty years after it first opened, and was reconstructed in an LKR 4.9 billion project before reopening in December 2019, going from 133 rooms to 159. The Bawa character was the point of the rebuild, but the services behind it are modern, which matters more for a wedding than it might for a holiday: power, air-conditioning, kitchens and back-of-house space are what carry a three-day event with several hundred guests.

For couples, the practical upshot is a heritage setting without heritage limitations. Ask the events team to walk you through the service routes for each space, so that caterers, decorators and the sound team can move without crossing the guests’ path.

Outings for guests along the coast

Bentota’s position on the south-west coast puts some of Sri Lanka’s best day trips within an easy drive, which makes it a good choice when guests are travelling a long way and want more than the wedding.

  • Lunuganga. Geoffrey Bawa’s own country estate, the garden he shaped over decades, is close to Bentota. For guests staying in his hotel, it is the natural pilgrimage.
  • Brief Garden. The garden of Bawa’s brother Bevis, near Bentota, full of sculpture and planting.
  • Galle Fort. The walled colonial town further down the coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with streets that suit a pre-wedding shoot or an evening out.
  • The Bentota river. Boat trips through the mangroves and lagoon, an easy morning for all ages.

Keep outings to the day before the main functions or to an extra day after the wedding. The wedding day itself should stay free, and the evening before it should end early enough for the family to rest.

Who sleeps where

The sixteen themed suites are the obvious allocation for the couple, both sets of parents and the most senior relatives. With 159 rooms in all, a wedding of up to about 300 guests can sleep on site at double occupancy; above that, or with many single travellers, plan a nearby overflow property and a shuttle. Agree in the contract when unused rooms can be released, and hold a handful back until the final fortnight for late changes.

Photographs at a Bawa building

This is a resort photographers love because the architecture frames the pictures for them: the courtyards, the long open corridors and the views to the river and the sea. Plan portraits for early morning or the hour before sunset, when the light on the south-west coast is softest, and save the ballroom for the evening functions. A short session in Galle Fort the day before the wedding adds a completely different look to the album.

Questions to put to the resort before you sign

  • Which settings, riverside, garden or beach, are permitted for the pheras with an open sacred fire, and what is the fallback in rain?
  • Can the ballroom be dressed for both the sangeet and the reception, and how much turnaround time is there between them?
  • Are Indian chefs available for our dates, and can a separate Jain line be run?
  • What is the minimum room block and the release date?
  • What are the music cut-off times indoors and outdoors?
  • Do any Poya days fall on or near our dates?
