Heritance Kandalama is Geoffrey Bawa’s hotel built into a rock face above the Kandalama reservoir near Dambulla, with 152 rooms and a Main Hall that seats 260 for a banquet and 350 for cocktails. On our Sri Lanka planning band of Rs 30,000 to Rs 55,000 per guest, a 150-guest wedding lands around Rs 45 lakh to Rs 82.5 lakh.

A wedding venue unlike the beach resorts

Most Sri Lanka weddings are beach weddings. Heritance Kandalama is the alternative for couples who want the island’s interior instead: jungle, a wide reservoir, and one of the most admired buildings in South Asia. Geoffrey Bawa designed the hotel to sit along a rock outcrop above the Kandalama reservoir, so the building almost disappears into the forest, and every room overlooks the water and the jungle.

It is in Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle, near the rock fortress of Sigiriya and the cave temples of Dambulla. For guests, that turns a wedding trip into a chance to see two of the island’s best-known sites; for the couple, it gives the photographs a setting nobody else’s beach wedding will share.

The hotel has 152 rooms including 15 suites, and 5,685 square feet of event space in total. That makes it a mid-size wedding venue: comfortable for 100 to 250 guests, with the Main Hall carrying the largest function and the outdoor terraces and gardens carrying the rest.

Wedding cost by guest count

No Sri Lankan resort publishes a rate card for an Indian wedding, so the figures below apply our published Sri Lanka planning band of Rs 30,000 to Rs 55,000 per guest, all-in, to each guest count. They are planning estimates, not quotes. Heritance Kandalama usually sits in the middle of the band; its inland location adds transfer time but its rates sit below the top beach resorts.

What drives the cost

  • Transfers. The hotel is roughly four hours by road from the main airport, so coaches for every guest, each way, are a significant line.
  • Catering. Confirm Indian and Jain menus and whether a specialist caterer is needed for your dates.
  • Decor in a protected landscape. The setting needs less decoration than a ballroom, but anything outdoors must respect the site; ask what structures and lighting are permitted.
  • Outings. Many families add a guided visit to Sigiriya or the Dambulla caves for guests, which is a pleasure and a budget line.

Getting there

Allow about four hours by road from Bandaranaike International Airport, more with traffic. That makes the arrival day a travel day; schedule only a light welcome that evening. The upside is that guests arrive somewhere that feels like a retreat, far from the city, and tend to stay for every function rather than drifting off to the beach.

Season

The cultural triangle sits in Sri Lanka’s dry zone and is drier than the coasts for much of the year, with its heavier rain coming late in the year from the north-east monsoon. Confirm conditions for your month with the hotel, and plan the Main Hall as a covered fallback for any outdoor function. Our Sri Lanka venues guide sets out the seasons for each region.

Running an Indian wedding here

The setting suits a calmer wedding: a morning haldi on a terrace above the water, pheras in the gardens at golden hour, and an evening reception in the Main Hall. Confirm the open-flame permission for the havan, agree music cut-off times for the sangeet, and check Poya days, when alcohol sales are restricted; our Sri Lanka destination wedding guide covers them.

Wildlife is part of the setting: monkeys and birds are everywhere at this hotel. Plan food service and decor with the hotel’s team so that open buffets and flowers do not become an invitation.

Comfort for guests in the dry zone

The cultural triangle is inland and lies in Sri Lanka’s dry zone, and the middle of the day can be hot. Plan the outdoor functions for the cooler hours: the haldi early in the morning, the pheras in the late afternoon into golden hour, and the sangeet and reception in the evening, when the Main Hall and the terraces are at their most comfortable. Tell guests to pack light fabrics for the daytime and something warmer for the evening by the water, and keep water, shade and seating ready for elderly guests at every outdoor function.

The same thinking applies to the Sigiriya climb. Go at dawn or not at all: the rock is exposed, the steps are many, and the heat builds quickly once the sun is up.

Ritual logistics inland

Being four hours from Colombo means ritual items and anything specific to your family’s tradition should travel with you rather than be sourced on arrival. Carry the puja items, the family’s ritual objects and any special clothing in labelled hand luggage, and confirm with the hotel’s florist which flowers can be sourced locally for the mandap and the garlands. Decide early whether your family priest travels with you; arranging one at short notice in the interior is harder than on the coast.

Who should book it

Book Heritance Kandalama for a wedding of 100 to 250 guests who are coming for the place, and for couples who would rather have jungle and architecture than a beach. If the beach matters, the other Bawa landmark, Cinnamon Bentota Beach, is on the south-west coast. If the guest list is larger, Shangri-La Hambantota is the island’s large-format venue.

Turning the location into the guest programme

Kandalama’s distance from the airport is offset by what is close to it. Few wedding venues anywhere have two World Heritage Sites within a short drive, and building them into the wedding gives guests a reason to come for the full three days.

  • Sigiriya. The fifth-century rock fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the island’s defining sights. The climb is best done early in the morning, before the heat.
  • The Dambulla cave temple. A complex of painted Buddhist cave shrines, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a short drive from the hotel.
  • Minneriya National Park. In the dry months it hosts the gathering of wild elephants at the reservoir, one of Asia’s great wildlife spectacles. Check the season for your dates.
  • The reservoir itself. Walks and boat outings on the Kandalama tank, for guests who would rather stay close.

Older guests may not manage the Sigiriya climb, so pair it with a gentler option on the same morning, such as the cave temple at Dambulla or a quiet walk by the reservoir, and bring everyone back together for lunch.

Who sleeps where

With 152 rooms including 15 suites, the hotel can house a wedding of around 250 at double occupancy. Give the suites to the couple, parents and elders, and group families along the same wing; the building is long, and placing relatives near each other saves a great deal of walking. Hold a few rooms back for late changes and agree the release date for the rest.

Photographs at Kandalama

The building is the photograph: Bawa’s long, green-covered structure along the rock, with the reservoir below. Portraits at sunrise over the water and on the terraces at golden hour are the signature shots, and a pre-wedding session at Sigiriya gives the album something no other Sri Lankan wedding has. Agree with the hotel which areas are open for a photography team at which hours.

Questions to put to the hotel before you sign

  • Which outdoor area is permitted for the pheras with an open sacred fire, and is the Main Hall held as the fallback?
  • What structures, lighting and sound are allowed outdoors in this setting?
  • How are buffets and decor protected from monkeys and birds?
  • Can Indian and Jain menus be served, and is a specialist caterer needed?
  • What is the minimum room block and the release date?
  • Can the hotel arrange guest outings to Sigiriya and Dambulla?
