Trinco Blu by Cinnamon is a beach resort of about 81 rooms in Trincomalee on Sri Lanka’s east coast, with an outdoor beach and garden setup for around 200 guests. The east coast is dry from May to September, when the south-west is wet. On our planning band of Rs 30,000 to Rs 55,000 per guest, a 100-guest wedding lands around Rs 30 lakh to Rs 55 lakh.

Why Trincomalee, and why Trinco Blu

Trincomalee answers a question most Sri Lanka guides skip: what if your wedding falls in the Indian summer? From May to September, the south-west monsoon brings rain to Bentota, Galle and Colombo, but the east coast is in its dry season, with calm bays and long beaches. A summer muhurat does not have to rule Sri Lanka out; it moves the wedding to the other side of the island.

Trinco Blu by Cinnamon is a beach resort on that coast, with all its rooms facing the ocean and an outdoor setup on the beach and gardens. It is the right size for an intimate or mid-size wedding rather than a large one.

The beach chalets sit closest to the shoreline, which makes them the natural rooms for the couple and close family. With around 81 rooms, a wedding of about 150 guests fits on site at double occupancy; above that, plan a second property nearby.

Wedding cost by guest count

No Sri Lankan resort publishes a rate card for an Indian wedding, so the figures below apply our published Sri Lanka planning band of Rs 30,000 to Rs 55,000 per guest, all-in, to each guest count. They are planning estimates, not quotes. Trinco Blu usually sits in the lower to middle part of the band; Trincomalee’s resorts are generally priced below the south-west coast’s premium properties.

What drives the cost

  • Getting guests there. Trincomalee is a long drive from the main airport, so the arrival plan is the biggest variable in both cost and guest comfort.
  • Room count. Above about 150 guests, a second property and shuttles are needed for every function.
  • Catering. Ask whether Indian chefs are available or a caterer travels in, and whether Jain food can be prepared separately.
  • The beach setup. A beach mandap needs wind-proof decor, power and lighting brought to the sand, which costs more than a lawn.

Getting there, by road or by sea

By road, Trincomalee is considerably further from Bandaranaike International Airport than the south-west resorts, so most families plan a full travel day. The more interesting option is by sea: Trincomalee is one of the Sri Lankan ports on Cordelia’s cruise itineraries, and its deep natural harbour is the reason. Our cruise and Sri Lanka wedding turns the journey into the welcome evening, with the haldi and pheras on arrival.

Season

The east coast is at its best from May to September. Later in the year the north-east monsoon brings rain to this side of the island, which is exactly when the south-west coast dries out. That is the two-coast pattern that makes Sri Lanka workable in almost any month; our Sri Lanka venues guide explains it region by region.

The harbour that makes Trincomalee different

Trincomalee sits on one of the finest natural harbours in Asia, a deep, sheltered bay that has made the town strategically important for centuries and is the reason cruise ships call here. For a wedding, the harbour gives you two things the west coast cannot: calm water close to shore in season, and the option of arriving by sea. Guests on our cruise format come ashore here, and even for a conventional wedding a boat trip across the bay makes a memorable welcome afternoon.

The town itself is smaller and quieter than Colombo or Galle, which suits a wedding that wants the guests’ attention rather than the city’s.

A temple on the headland

Trincomalee has a meaning for Hindu families that no other Sri Lankan wedding town shares. The Koneswaram temple stands on Swami Rock, the headland above the harbour, and is one of the island’s most revered Hindu shrines, dedicated to Shiva. Many families visit for a blessing before the wedding, and the rock’s views over the bay make it a memorable outing for guests. Confirm visiting hours and dress expectations with the temple before planning a group visit.

Running an Indian wedding here

A beach wedding on the east coast is gentler than on the west: the bays are calmer in season and evenings are pleasant for an outdoor sangeet. Confirm the open-flame permission for the havan, agree the music cut-off, and plan wind-proof decor for the mandap. Check Poya days before fixing the date, as alcohol sales are restricted; our Sri Lanka destination wedding guide explains how resorts handle them.

Ritual logistics on the east coast

Trincomalee has a long Hindu tradition of its own, which helps: arranging a priest locally is more realistic here than in many Sri Lankan resort towns, though most families still bring their own. Carry the puja items and any family ritual objects in labelled hand luggage, and confirm with the resort which flowers can be sourced for the mandap and garlands. If you are arriving by sea on our cruise format, pack everything for the haldi and pheras in one bag that comes ashore with the family on day two.

Who should book it

Trinco Blu suits an intimate or mid-size wedding of up to about 150 guests with a summer date, or any couple who wants the calmer east coast. For a winter date, the south-west coast at Cinnamon Bentota Beach is the natural choice; for a large wedding, Shangri-La Hambantota.

Days out for guests in Trincomalee

Trincomalee rewards guests who arrive a day early or stay a day late, and building a little of it into the programme makes the longer journey feel worthwhile.

  • Pigeon Island National Park. A small marine reserve off Nilaveli, north of the town, known for coral and snorkelling in season. A boat trip suits the younger guests.
  • Fort Frederick and Swami Rock. The old fort on the headland, inside which the path climbs to the Koneswaram temple and its views over the bay.
  • Nilaveli and Marble Beach. Long, quiet beaches up and down the coast for a lazy afternoon.
  • Whale watching. In season, boats go out from Trincomalee to see whales and dolphins. Check the months against your dates.

Who sleeps where

The beach chalets, closest to the shoreline, suit the couple and close family; the suites suit parents and elders. With about 81 rooms, the resort houses a wedding of around 150 at double occupancy. For larger lists, place the overflow at a nearby property and plan shuttles for every function, or keep the wedding intimate and let the setting do the work. Hold a few rooms back for late changes and agree the release date.

Photographs on the east coast

On this side of the island the sun rises over the sea, so sunrise portraits on the beach are the signature shot, a reversal of the west coast’s sunsets. The harbour views from Swami Rock and the light on the bay in the late afternoon round out the album. Plan beach portraits early, before the sand heats up and the light hardens.

Questions to put to the resort before you sign

  • Is an open sacred fire permitted on the beach, and what is the fallback if the wind or rain rises?
  • How many guests can the beach setup seat for dinner, and how is power brought to the sand?
  • Are Indian chefs available for our dates, or does a caterer travel in?
  • Which nearby property do you recommend for overflow rooms, and how far is it?
  • What is the music cut-off on the beach?
  • Do any Poya days fall on or near our dates?
