A wedding mandap under a lit banyan tree on a heritage hotel lawn in Chennai

A wedding at Taj Connemara, Chennai typically runs Rs 20 lakh to Rs 60 lakh for 200 to 600 guests, usually a muhurtham and a reception. It is one of Chennai’s heritage hotels, off Anna Salai in the city centre, with a ballroom listed for 250 to 400 guests and the Banyan Lawn for up to 600, and listed catering from about Rs 2,200 a plate.

The short answer

Budget Rs 20 lakh to Rs 60 lakh for a wedding at Taj Connemara with 200 to 600 guests. A reception for 250 in the ballroom sits near the lower end; a muhurtham and a lawn reception for 600 with a large decor build approaches the top.

Weddingz lists catering at Rs 2,200 a plate vegetarian and Rs 2,400 non-vegetarian. That listing is undated and may not include taxes or a full wedding menu, so we plan Chennai five-star heritage weddings at Rs 2,500 to Rs 4,000 a plate per function until the hotel quotes.

What Taj Connemara is

Taj Connemara stands on Binny Road, just off Anna Salai, in the commercial heart of Chennai. It is one of the city’s oldest hotels, with a history going back to the 19th century, and it keeps much of its heritage character: colonial architecture, high ceilings and an old banyan tree on the lawn that gives its name to the hotel’s best-known event space. For a Chennai wedding, it offers a heritage setting and an outdoor lawn in the middle of the city, where most hotel weddings happen in modern ballrooms.

The event spaces

SpaceCapacity listedSource
Banyan LawnUp to 600Spalba
Ballroom250 seated, 400 maximum (Weddingz); 100 to 250, or 300 in 3,294 sq ft (Spalba)Directories
Binny Room120 (Spalba); 150 seated, 250 maximum (Weddingz)Directories
Wallajah RoomUp to 60Spalba
Arcot RoomUp to 40Spalba

The ballroom figures disagree across listings, so ask the hotel for the seated dinner capacity with a stage for your layout. For a larger Chennai wedding, the Banyan Lawn is the main event space; the ballroom suits a reception of up to about 250 seated.

Rooms

The listings we checked do not give a room count, so ask the hotel how many rooms it can hold for a wedding block. For most Chennai weddings, where the majority of guests live in the city, a modest block for out-of-town family is enough, and the central location makes it easy for local guests to come and go. Our guide to wedding hotel room blocks covers what to negotiate.

The rituals are explained in our guides to Tamil Brahmin and South Indian weddings.

Season and the weather

Chennai is warm all year. The most comfortable months for an outdoor function are December to February. The northeast monsoon brings heavy rain from October to December, which can wash out a lawn evening, and April to June is hot and humid. For a lawn reception, plan a covered fallback in the ballroom. Our muhurat calendar lists the auspicious dates.

Food

A Chennai wedding lunch is usually a traditional vegetarian meal on banana leaves, with sambar, rasam, kootu, poriyal, appalam and payasam, served in batches. The reception dinner is broader: Chettinad, North Indian and continental counters, with seafood for families who eat it. Ask the hotel whether a traditional caterer can serve the lunch, and how many live counters it runs per hundred guests at night. Our guide to the per-plate cost of an Indian wedding explains how menus and taxes add up.

Decor in a heritage setting

The banyan tree and the colonial architecture do much of the decorator’s work. Jasmine, marigold, banana stems and brass lamps suit the muhurtham; for the evening, warm lighting in the banyan’s branches and around the lawn creates the mood. Keep structures low and secure, and plan for wind and rain on the lawn.

Music and the finishing time

Central Chennai is a dense, busy area, and outdoor amplified music generally has to stop by 10 pm under the noise rules unless a specific permission applies. Plan the reception to peak early, and agree the finishing time with the hotel in writing.

A reception for out-of-town and local guests

Chennai weddings often have two audiences: close family and friends who attend the muhurtham, and a much larger circle of colleagues, neighbours and the extended community who come only to the reception. Plan the two functions for different numbers, with the morning in the ballroom or Binny Room and the evening on the Banyan Lawn, and send the reception invitation with a clear start time and the hotel’s address and parking details.

Parking and arrivals

With hundreds of guests driving in to the city centre, valet capacity and overflow parking are worth agreeing in advance, along with a drop-off point for elderly guests. Anna Salai traffic peaks in the early evening, so start the reception late enough for guests to arrive.

Rooms for the families on the muhurtham night

A Chennai muhurtham often starts at dawn, and the rituals before it, the Kashi Yatra and the garland exchange, begin earlier still. Booking rooms at the hotel for both families on the night before saves a pre-dawn drive across the city and gives the bride and groom a place to dress. Ask the hotel for early breakfast for the families and a room close to the event space where the elders can rest between the rituals.

Guests between functions

The gap between a morning muhurtham and an evening reception gives out-of-town guests a free afternoon in the city. Marina Beach, the Kapaleeshwarar temple and the old streets of Mylapore, and the Government Museum at Egmore are all within a short drive of Anna Salai. Arrange a car for elderly relatives, and set up a quiet room at the hotel for anyone who would rather rest before the reception.

Combining traditions

Chennai weddings increasingly bring together families from different communities and states: a Tamil family marrying into a Telugu, Malayali or North Indian one. The hotel’s spaces make it easy to give each tradition its moment, with a muhurtham under a South Indian mandap in the morning and a sangeet or a North Indian reception on the lawn in the evening. Agree both sets of rituals, both priests and both menus early, and let each family lead the function that matters most to it.

Photography

The colonial architecture, the high ceilings and the old banyan tree give a photographer a heritage backdrop that modern Chennai hotels cannot match. Plan a short portrait session in the hotel’s heritage spaces in the late afternoon, between the muhurtham and the reception, and use the lit banyan tree as the backdrop for the evening.

Taj Connemara against other Chennai venues

  • Against ITC Grand Chola: a vast luxury hotel with large ballrooms for very big weddings, at a higher price. Connemara offers heritage and a lawn at a smaller scale.
  • Against Taj Coromandel: a modern Taj nearby with ballrooms; choose Connemara for the heritage setting and the Banyan Lawn.
  • Against The Leela Palace Chennai: a sea-facing palace-style hotel; compare ballroom size and price.

Budgeting a heritage wedding sensibly

A heritage hotel wedding in Chennai can stay within a sensible budget if three decisions are made early. Fix the guest list for each function separately, because the lunch after a muhurtham and the evening reception rarely have the same numbers. Let the setting do the decorating, spending on lighting and the mandap rather than covering the colonial interiors in flowers. And agree every menu and its per-plate price, including taxes, in the first quote, so the food line, the largest in the budget, does not drift.

Who Taj Connemara suits

It suits a Chennai wedding of 200 to 600 guests that wants a central location, a heritage setting and an outdoor lawn, at a lower price than the city’s largest luxury hotels. It is less suited to a 1,500-guest wedding, which needs a very large ballroom or a marriage hall.

Questions to ask the hotel

  • What is the seated dinner capacity of the Banyan Lawn and the ballroom with a stage?
  • What are the current per-plate rates, including taxes?
  • How many rooms can be held for a wedding block?
  • Can a traditional caterer serve the muhurtham lunch?
  • What is the rain plan for the lawn?

What sits outside the quote

  • GST and service charge, if not included.
  • Decor and any outside decorator’s access fee.
  • Flowers and ritual materials for the muhurtham.
  • Valet and parking for a large guest list.
