A Mahabalipuram wedding costs roughly Rs 15 lakh to Rs 80 lakh, and the market itself publishes that split as budget, mid-range and luxury tiers. Radisson Blu Temple Bay quotes about Rs 42 lakh a day for 100 rooms and takes up to 2,500 guests. It is Chennai’s beach wedding market, an hour down the ECR, with a UNESCO World Heritage site attached.
Chennai’s beach wedding market, and the one with monuments
Mahabalipuram, officially Mamallapuram, sits about 55 km south of Chennai on the East Coast Road. It was a working port of the Pallava dynasty in the seventh and eighth centuries, and the Group of Monuments there is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Shore Temple, the rock-cut rathas, Arjuna’s Penance carved into a granite face.
For a Chennai family, this is the destination wedding that is not really a journey. An hour down a good road, a beach, five-star resorts with real capacity, and a set of monuments that give the photography a character no resort strip can manufacture. Against Goa, which is the reflex beach answer, it costs less, needs no flights and puts your guests an hour from home.
This site already covers the flagship property in detail at Radisson Blu Temple Bay. This page is the market around it.
What a Mahabalipuram wedding costs in 2026
The market publishes a clean three-tier split, which is unusual and useful:
- Budget: Rs 15 lakh to Rs 25 lakh
- Mid-range: Rs 25 lakh to Rs 50 lakh
- Luxury: Rs 50 lakh to Rs 80 lakh and above
Individual listings fill that in. Radisson Blu Resort Temple Bay lists a destination price of about Rs 42 lakh a day for 100 rooms with capacity from 70 to 2,500. Ideal Beach Resort lists about Rs 2,100 per plate for 1,000-plus guests. And Tamil Nadu’s own tourism corporation publishes a strikingly transparent number for the TTDC Beach Resort Complex: Rs 4,33,428 for 100 guests, 25 rooms and two nights with vegetarian catering.
That TTDC figure is worth pausing on. It is a government-run property publishing an all-in package price to the rupee, which almost nothing else in Indian wedding hospitality does. Whatever you end up booking, it is the cleanest available benchmark for what a modest two-night coastal wedding should cost before anyone adds decor and production.
| Venue | Pricing | Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| TTDC Beach Resort Complex | Rs 4.33 lakh, 100 guests, 25 rooms, 2 nights | Mid-size |
| Chariot Beach Resort | Mid tier | Large, well reviewed |
| Ideal Beach Resort | Rs 2,100 per plate | 1,000 plus |
| Welcomhotel by ITC, Kences Palm Beach | Upper mid tier | Mid to large |
| Four Points by Sheraton Mahabalipuram | Brand-standard | Mid to large |
| Sheraton Grand Chennai Resort and Spa | Luxury tier | Large |
| Radisson Blu Resort Temple Bay | Rs 42 lakh per day, 100 rooms | 70 to 2,500 |
| Kaldan Samudhra Palace | Luxury, boutique | Intimate to mid |
The monuments, and what you may and may not do
Every couple asks. The answer is worth knowing before you build a shoot list.
The Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram is a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India. They are not venues. You cannot hold a function at the Shore Temple, and you should not plan on one. Photography at protected monuments is subject to ASI rules, and commercial or professional photography, tripods and drones generally require prior permission and fees rather than being available on the day. Rules and charges change, so this is something for your planner to confirm in the current year rather than something to assume from a blog post.
What works reliably is the beach and the resort grounds for functions, with a monument sequence for the couple arranged properly in advance. That gets you the photographs without putting a 300-guest baraat inside a protected site, which was never going to happen anyway.
One more practical note: this is a working coastal town with a large visitor footfall, and the public beach is genuinely public. If your image is a private sand ceremony, you need a resort with its own controlled frontage, not a public stretch.
Season, and the northeast monsoon trap
- December to February. The best window. Warm days, cooler evenings, low rain, and the season Chennai itself marries in. Peak rates and tight availability.
- March to May. Hot and humid, with coastal temperatures in the high thirties. Evening beach functions work; daytime ones need serious cooling.
- June to September. The southwest monsoon largely misses this coast, so this is a workable and much cheaper window. Hot and humid, but drier than most of India.
- October to early December. The northeast monsoon, and this is the trap. Chennai’s heaviest rain falls here and cyclone activity in the Bay of Bengal is a genuine consideration. A late-November beach wedding on this coast is a weather bet.
That inversion catches planners from outside Tamil Nadu constantly. The safe months on the Coromandel coast are not the safe months in Mumbai or Goa. The same warning applies at Pondicherry, ninety minutes further down the same road.
Logistics, the easiest in this batch
Chennai airport is about 60 km and roughly ninety minutes on the ECR, which is a good road. That is the whole logistics section, and it is why this market deserves more attention than it gets. No ghat, no buffer day, no coach fleet negotiating hairpins. Guests can fly in on the morning of a function if they must.
The practical consequence shows up in the budget: the transport line here is a third of what a hill destination in this batch carries, and attendance holds up in a way it does not when you ask people to drive four hours. Compare with a Chennai city wedding and the gap is mostly the room block, since Chennai guests will not need one.
The ECR strip, and choosing where along it to sit
Mahabalipuram is not a single point. The wedding-capable properties are spread along roughly forty kilometres of the East Coast Road between Chennai and the town, and where you sit on that strip changes the wedding.
The Chennai end, roughly 20 to 35 km out. Sheraton Grand Chennai Resort and Spa and the properties near Kovalam beach. Closest to the city, so day guests can attend without a room, and the shortest transfer for anyone flying in that morning. Least sense of having gone anywhere.
The middle, around 40 km. Four Points by Sheraton and the mid-tier resorts. The compromise position, and where most 200 to 300 guest weddings sit comfortably.
The town end, 55 km and beyond. Radisson Blu Temple Bay, Chariot, Ideal Beach, Kences Palm Beach, Kaldan Samudhra. The monuments are here, the beach is better, and the transfer is ninety minutes rather than forty-five.
The rule is simple: if a meaningful share of your guest list is Chennai-based and will drive out for the evening rather than stay, the extra twenty kilometres will cost you attendance at the sangeet. If everyone is staying two nights anyway, go to the town end and take the monuments and the better beach.
One more practical point that catches people. The ECR is a single road, and it carries heavy weekend traffic out of Chennai on Friday evenings and back on Sunday. A Friday-evening baraat transfer that the venue quotes at forty-five minutes can take ninety. Drive the route at the hour you intend to move guests before you fix the running order.
Where Mahabalipuram budgets go wrong
Booking October or November. Covered above, and the most expensive mistake available here.
Assuming beach access. Confirm what frontage the property actually controls.
Planning monument functions. Photography with permission, yes. Functions, no.
Underestimating humidity and power. Sea-level coastal in a Tamil Nadu summer needs cooling, covered walkways and generator backup, and florals chosen for the conditions rather than for a Delhi-in-December mood board.
What the TTDC number teaches you about every other quote
It is worth spending a moment on that Rs 4,33,428 figure, because it is the most useful single number on this page and it is not from a resort trying to win your business.
Break it down: 100 guests, 25 rooms, two nights, vegetarian catering, one government property. That is roughly Rs 4,334 per guest all-in for two nights of accommodation and food. When a private resort quotes you Rs 2,100 a plate and a room rate on top, you can now sanity-check whether their all-in per-guest number is sitting sensibly above a state-run baseline or wildly above it.
What that number does not include is the part where most Mahabalipuram budgets actually go: decor, florals, lighting, sound, stage, photography and the production team. In our worked budgets below, those lines together are larger than venue and catering at every guest count. That is normal and it is worth internalising early, because couples routinely negotiate hard on the plate rate, win Rs 200 a head, and then approve a decor quote three times the size of the saving without the same scrutiny.
Use TTDC as the floor, not the plan. It is a comfortable government resort, not a five-star beachfront, and the reason to know the number is calibration rather than booking.
Three worked budgets
| Line item | 100 guests, 2 days | 250 guests, 2 days | 500 guests, 3 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Venue and catering | Rs 4.5 lakh | Rs 12 lakh | Rs 28 lakh |
| Rooms | Rs 2.5 lakh | Rs 6 lakh | Rs 13 lakh |
| Decor and florals | Rs 3 lakh | Rs 6.5 lakh | Rs 13 lakh |
| Sound, light, stage | Rs 1.5 lakh | Rs 3.2 lakh | Rs 6.5 lakh |
| Transport from Chennai | Rs 0.8 lakh | Rs 1.6 lakh | Rs 3 lakh |
| Photo and video | Rs 2.2 lakh | Rs 4 lakh | Rs 6 lakh |
| Cooling, power, misc | Rs 1.8 lakh | Rs 3.5 lakh | Rs 7 lakh |
| Indicative total | Rs 16.3 lakh | Rs 36.8 lakh | Rs 76.5 lakh |
Those land inside the Rs 15 to 80 lakh band the market publishes. Note the transport line: Rs 3 lakh at 500 guests, against Rs 5.5 lakh for 250 guests in the Himachal markets in this same batch. Proximity is worth real money. See the national cost breakdown to place these against a metro wedding.
Who Mahabalipuram is right for
It is right for a Chennai or Tamil Nadu family with 100 to 500 guests who want a beach wedding without flights. It is right for anyone weighing Goa and balking at the travel cost for a large guest list. It is right in December to February, and cheap and workable from June to September.
It is wrong from mid-October to early December, and wrong if you want hills or cool weather, where Ooty and Kodaikanal serve the same catchment. For a wider set, see the Chennai venue shortlist and the national one.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a wedding in Mahabalipuram cost?
The market publishes Rs 15 to 25 lakh for a budget wedding, Rs 25 to 50 lakh mid-range and Rs 50 to 80 lakh plus for luxury. Our worked budgets land at Rs 16 lakh for 100 guests, Rs 37 lakh for 250 and Rs 76 lakh for 500 over three days.
Can you get married at the Shore Temple or the Mahabalipuram monuments?
No. The Group of Monuments is a UNESCO World Heritage Site protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and is not an event venue. Professional photography at protected monuments generally needs prior permission and fees, so have your planner confirm current rules. Hold functions at a resort and arrange a monument sequence for the couple separately.
What does Radisson Blu Temple Bay cost for a wedding?
It lists a destination price of about Rs 42 lakh per day for 100 rooms, with event capacity from 70 to 2,500 guests. It is the largest and most complete wedding product in the market.
When is the best time for a Mahabalipuram wedding?
December to February. June to September is surprisingly workable and much cheaper because the southwest monsoon largely misses this coast. Avoid mid-October to early December, which is the northeast monsoon with genuine cyclone risk.
How far is Mahabalipuram from Chennai?
About 55 km from the city and 60 km from the airport, roughly ninety minutes on the East Coast Road. It is the easiest-access destination in this batch, which keeps both the transport budget and guest attendance high.
Is Mahabalipuram cheaper than Goa for a beach wedding?
For a Chennai or Tamil Nadu guest list, substantially, because nobody has to fly and most guests do not need a room. The venue and catering rates themselves are broadly comparable at the mid tier.
