A two-day wedding for about 250 guests at the City Palace complex in Udaipur typically lands between Rs 1.5 crore and Rs 3 crore all-in in 2026. Published prices disagree by a factor of three because they price different things: one function’s venue hire, a day of rooms and meals, or a whole wedding. Manek Chowk takes buffets of up to 1,000 guests.
Why City Palace wedding prices disagree
Search for the cost of a City Palace wedding and you will find figures from Rs 36 lakh to Rs 2.5 crore, sometimes on the same page of results. None of them is wrong. They are answers to different questions, and the most useful thing anyone can do before calling the palace is to work out which question each number answers.
| Figure you will see | What it actually covers | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| From Rs 36 lakh | Venue rental only, Zenana Mahal, one function | Planner estimate |
| Rs 72 lakh a day | About 100 rooms, three meals and the venue, for one day | Venue directory listing |
| Rs 90 lakh per function, taxes extra | A single function package | Venue directory listing |
| Rs 90 lakh to Rs 1.5 crore | The whole wedding, about 250 guests | Planner estimate |
| Rs 1.6 crore to Rs 2.5 crore | The whole wedding, larger formats | Planner estimates |
Read that way, the numbers line up. A single evening at Manek Chowk or the Zenana Mahal is a large ticket on its own, a day with the on-site rooms and meals bundled is a second kind of ticket, and a two or three function wedding adds the two together with decor and production on top. The palace’s own operator publishes capacities and what a package includes, but not prices, so every rupee figure in circulation is a listing or an estimate. Treat them as a range to test, not a rate card.

Who runs weddings at the City Palace
The City Palace is not one building but a complex of palaces on the ridge above the east bank of Lake Pichola, built from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries and run in part as a public museum since 1969. The museum alone covers about 20,000 square metres and receives more than eight lakh visitors a year, which matters to a wedding more than couples expect: you are booking spaces inside a working heritage site, not a hotel ballroom.
The event spaces, and the two palace hotels inside the complex, are operated by the HRH Group of Hotels, the hospitality company of the former Udaipur royal family. The same company runs Jagmandir Island Palace out on the lake, which is why the two are so often combined in one wedding. Enquiries go to HRH’s events team rather than to a third party, and the package they quote typically covers venue hire, welcome arrangements, decor, food and beverage and entertainment as one figure.
The spaces, and what each holds
HRH names five spaces inside the complex as event venues: Manek Chowk, the Zenana Mahal, Mor Chowk, Moti Chowk and Baadi Mahal. A sixth, the Durbar Hall, sits in the Fateh Prakash Palace hotel. The capacities below are the operator’s own where it publishes them, and the listed figure otherwise.
| Space | Character | Capacity | Best used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manek Chowk | The palace forecourt, where the Maharanas held court and festivities | Up to 200 at a seated dinner, up to 1,000 at a buffet (operator) | Reception, the large sangeet, a wedding dinner under the facade |
| Zenana Mahal | The former palace of the royal women, an enclosed courtyard | 450 seated, 500 standing (as listed) | Pheras, a mehendi, a more private evening |
| Durbar Hall, Fateh Prakash Palace | Pillar-free royal court hall from the early 1910s, crystal chandeliers, lake views from the gallery | 150 to 210 at a banquet, up to 390 theatre style (operator) | A formal dinner, a winter function, the weather backup |
| Mor Chowk | The peacock courtyard, famous for its glass mosaic peacocks | Not published, small | Portraits and a short ceremony moment, by arrangement |
| Baadi Mahal | The garden palace at the highest point of the ridge | Not published | An intimate function or cocktails |
Two things in that table are easy to misread. First, Manek Chowk’s two numbers are not a contradiction: 200 is a plated or seated dinner, 1,000 is a buffet with guests moving. A listing that quotes 850 seated is counting theatre rows, not dinner tables. Second, the Durbar Hall is the only fully covered large space in the set. Every other venue here is a courtyard, which is the whole appeal and also the whole risk if the weather turns.
Rooms on the complex, and why they decide the guest count
The complex has two palace hotels: Shiv Niwas Palace, listed at 27 rooms and 9 suites, and Fateh Prakash Palace, listed at 16 suites and 48 premier suites. Together that is roughly 100 keys, which is the number the day packages are built around. At double occupancy it houses about 200 guests on site.
| Guest count | Rooms needed at double occupancy | On the complex? | What that means for the plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 150 | About 75 | Yes, with rooms to spare | The whole wedding can live inside the palace walls |
| 200 | About 100 | Just, using every key | No buffer for planners, crew or late additions |
| 300 | About 150 | No | Family on site, the rest in lakeside hotels with transfers |
| 500 and above | 250 or more | No | Manek Chowk for the big evening, guests spread across the city |
That last row is the real reason Manek Chowk gets booked for 1,000-guest receptions: the courtyard scales, the rooms do not. A wedding of that size uses the palace as the stage for one or two evenings and houses guests elsewhere, which is a very different budget from a 150-guest wedding that takes the whole complex for three days.
A realistic budget for a 250-guest wedding
An illustrative two-day wedding for about 250 guests, with the on-site rooms for family and a partner hotel for the rest, three functions, and palace-scale decor. These are planning anchors, not quotes. The operator does not publish a rate card, so every line has to be confirmed in the proposal.
| Line item | Indicative 2026 cost | What drives it |
|---|---|---|
| Venue packages, two evenings (Manek Chowk and Zenana Mahal) | Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore | Which spaces, which dates, and how much food is bundled |
| On-site rooms, about 100 keys, two nights | Rs 30 lakh to Rs 60 lakh | Season and the suite mix |
| Overflow rooms in a partner hotel | Rs 5 lakh to Rs 15 lakh | How many guests sit outside the walls |
| Food and beverage beyond the packages | Rs 15 lakh to Rs 40 lakh | Number of meals, bar, live counters |
| Decor, lighting and production | Rs 25 lakh to Rs 60 lakh | Courtyard dressing and power for open-air evenings |
| Photography and film | Rs 5 lakh to Rs 15 lakh | Team size and coverage days |
| Transfers, boats and hospitality | Rs 5 lakh to Rs 15 lakh | Airport runs and any Jagmandir crossing |
| All-in | Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 3 crore | Taxes on top of most lines |
For comparison, our guide to the sibling venue on the lake puts per-plate catering at Rs 4,500 to Rs 8,500 and a 250-guest wedding at Rs 2.5 crore to Rs 6 crore, because an island takeover carries boat logistics and full exclusivity. The City Palace usually comes in below that for the same guest count, mainly because its rooms are on site and nothing has to cross the water. For how this sits against the other palace venues in India, our palace wedding cost guide has the national comparison.

What makes the City Palace different from the lake hotels
The obvious comparison is with the Taj Lake Palace, the Oberoi Udaivilas and the Leela Palace Udaipur. All four sell the same view of Lake Pichola. The difference is what you are standing in when you see it.
The lake hotels are luxury hotels in a heritage style, built or rebuilt to host guests. The City Palace is the original seat of the Mewar court, and its courtyards were designed for exactly the kind of public ceremony a wedding is. That gives it something none of the hotels can offer: a ceremony in a courtyard where a royal court actually sat, with the palace facade as the backdrop rather than a hotel wing. It also explains its limits. Courtyards have no roof, the room count is fixed, and a working museum sets the rhythm of access.
| Question | City Palace complex | A lake hotel |
|---|---|---|
| Largest single function | Up to 1,000 at a Manek Chowk buffet | Usually a few hundred on a lawn |
| Rooms on site | About 100 across two palace hotels | Varies by property |
| Covered backup | The Durbar Hall, up to 210 at a banquet | Ballrooms and covered terraces |
| Public access during the day | A museum with eight lakh visitors a year | Guests only |
| Who runs events | The former royal family’s hotel company | The hotel group |
Our Udaipur wedding venues guide sets all of these side by side if you are still choosing.
Planning around a working museum
Because the complex is open to the public, the most important question to ask HRH is not the price but the timing: when your space is released for set-up, how late the evening can run, and what the public route through the palace looks like on your date. A courtyard that becomes yours at a set hour leaves a fixed window to build decor, light the facade and seat guests, and that window, not the budget, is what usually constrains an ambitious design.
Ask three more things in writing before you sign:
- Outside vendors. Listings state that outside decorators and caterers are permitted. Get the terms, including any service charge levied on outside suppliers, into the contract rather than relying on a listing.
- Sound and fireworks. An old-city courtyard beside a lake is surrounded by homes and other hotels. Confirm the cut-off for amplified music and whether any pyrotechnics are allowed at all.
- Weather backup. Five of the six spaces are open to the sky. Hold the Durbar Hall or a covered alternative for any function that cannot move.
Getting guests in, and the baraat
Udaipur’s airport is about 22 kilometres from the old city, and the last stretch to the palace runs through narrow lanes that large coaches handle badly. Plan for smaller vehicles for the final leg, staggered arrivals rather than one convoy, and a clear drop point agreed with the venue. The baraat is the event most affected: confirm the route and its length with the palace in advance, because a procession that works on a resort lawn needs negotiating in an old city.
The season is the usual Rajasthan one. October to March is peak, the most popular dates book a year or more ahead, and the shoulder weeks either side of the winter peak are where dates and terms are easiest to find. The hot months make open-air courtyards hard work for guests in heavy clothes, which is why summer weddings here lean on the Durbar Hall and evening timings.
Combining the City Palace with Jagmandir
Because one company runs both, the most common large format splits the wedding across the shore and the lake: the pheras or a daytime function on Jagmandir Island Palace, reached by boat, and the reception at Manek Chowk, where a buffet can take the full guest list. It answers the island’s limits with the courtyard’s scale and keeps guests in the palace hotels between events. Budget for boat transfers in both directions and for the time they take, because a crossing for several hundred guests is not quick.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a wedding at City Palace Udaipur cost?
A two-day wedding for about 250 guests typically costs Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 3 crore all-in in 2026. Published figures range from Rs 36 lakh to Rs 2.5 crore because they price different things: venue rental for one function, a day of rooms and meals, or the whole wedding. The operator does not publish a rate card, so confirm every line in its proposal.
How many guests can Manek Chowk hold?
The operator lists Manek Chowk for seated dinners and banquets of up to 200 guests and buffets of up to 1,000. Listings that quote around 850 seated are counting theatre-style rows rather than dinner seating.
Can you get married in the Zenana Mahal?
Yes. The Zenana Mahal, the former palace of the royal women, is one of the event spaces inside the complex and is listed for around 450 seated and 500 standing guests. It is an enclosed courtyard, well suited to pheras or a mehendi.
How many rooms are there inside the City Palace complex?
About 100 across two palace hotels: Shiv Niwas Palace, listed at 27 rooms and 9 suites, and Fateh Prakash Palace, listed at 16 suites and 48 premier suites. At double occupancy that houses roughly 200 guests on site.
Who do you book a City Palace wedding through?
The event spaces and palace hotels are run by the HRH Group of Hotels, the hospitality company of the former Udaipur royal family, which also runs Jagmandir Island Palace. Its packages usually bundle venue hire, welcome arrangements, decor, food and beverage and entertainment into one figure.
Is the City Palace cheaper than the Taj Lake Palace for a wedding?
Usually, for the same guest count, because the City Palace has around 100 rooms on site, a courtyard that takes buffets of up to 1,000, and no boat logistics. The Taj Lake Palace sells full island exclusivity, which is priced accordingly.
