A Sikh marriage in India is solemnised by the Anand Karaj ceremony and can be registered under the Anand Marriage Act, 1909, which since the 2012 amendment provides for the registration of Anand Karaj marriages. States implement the Act through their own rules and registering authority. Couples can alternatively register under the Hindu Marriage Act or the civil Special Marriage Act, and the certificate is needed for visas, passports and other official purposes.

Note: This is general guidance for 2026, not legal advice. Marriage law in India is governed by central Acts but administered state by state, so forms, fees and timelines vary. Always confirm the current process on the official state portal or with your local Sub-Registrar or Marriage Officer, and consult a lawyer for your specific situation.

The Anand Marriage Act and the 2012 amendment

The Anand Marriage Act, 1909 recognises the Anand Karaj as a valid form of Sikh marriage. For decades it provided recognition but not a clear registration route, so Sikh marriages were often registered under the Hindu Marriage Act. The Anand Marriage (Amendment) Act, 2012 inserted a provision for the registration of Anand Karaj marriages, giving Sikh couples a registration route specific to their marriage. States frame their own rules and designate the registering authority under the Act. See the pillar overview at marriage registration in India, and our Sikh wedding and Anand Karaj for the ceremony itself.

Anand Karaj: the marriage itself

The Anand Karaj, meaning ‘blissful union’, is solemnised in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib, with the couple taking four laavan (rounds) as the hymns are sung. It is the religious marriage; registration is the civil record of it. Because the Anand Marriage Act recognises the Anand Karaj specifically, registering under it records the marriage as a Sikh marriage rather than under another personal law. Our Sikh wedding and Anand Karaj and Punjabi wedding traditions guides cover the ceremony and customs.

How registration works by state

Because the states implement the Anand Marriage Act through their own rules, the registering authority and exact procedure vary. Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and several other states have notified rules for registering Anand Karaj marriages; our marriage registration in Punjab guide covers the position in Punjab. Where a state has not operationalised the Anand Marriage Act route, Sikh couples register under the Hindu Marriage Act instead. Confirm the current procedure and authority for your state.

The process step by step

  1. Solemnise the Anand Karaj at a gurdwara or your venue.
  2. Apply to the designated registering authority under the Anand Marriage Act rules for your state, or under the Hindu Marriage Act where that is the route.
  3. Submit documents, photographs and proof of the Anand Karaj, with witnesses.
  4. Verification, then collect the marriage certificate.

The document set is broadly the same as other registrations; our documents required for marriage registration guide has the checklist.

Documents required

Typically: age proof and identity proof for both parties, address proof, passport-size photographs, proof of the Anand Karaj such as the wedding invitation and a gurdwara or granthi certificate, an affidavit, and witnesses with ID. Requirements vary by state, so confirm with the registering authority. A previously married person adds the divorce decree or the former spouse’s death certificate.

The Special Marriage Act alternative

A Sikh couple, or an inter-faith couple where one partner is Sikh, can also marry or register under the civil Special Marriage Act 1954, which produces a certificate directly and requires no religious ceremony or conversion. Some couples have the Anand Karaj as the religious marriage and register under the Anand Marriage Act or Hindu Marriage Act, while inter-faith couples often prefer the Special Marriage Act. Our inter-caste and inter-religion marriage guide covers the inter-faith route.

After the wedding

Keep several certified copies of the marriage certificate. You will need it for the spouse’s passport, visas, joint accounts, a name change after marriage if you choose, and, for the large Sikh diaspora moving abroad, an apostille for a marriage certificate. Our marriage certificate in India and NRI marriage registration guides cover these, and our Punjabi wedding cost guide helps with planning the celebration.
