The Tamara Kodai occupies a restored nineteenth-century building on St Marys Road in Kodaikanal, in the Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu. The structure dates to the 1840s, which makes it one of the oldest hospitality buildings in the South Indian hills and the reason it looks like nothing else in Kodaikanal. What the numbers actually say, and where they disagree
This is the unusual part of researching this property, and it is worth setting out plainly rather than picking a figure and sounding confident.
Room count. Architectural Digest describes 22 rooms and suites. One wedding directory lists 42. WeddingSutra and an older property write-up both say 53 suites. That is a three-way split among sources that are all reasonable, and the likely explanation is that the property has changed configuration over time and the older numbers have not been updated. But we do not know that, and neither do the directories.
Capacity. The Puliyan Hall is listed at up to 200 guests, and WeddingSutra describes banqueting spaces holding up to 200 at a time. Venuebookingz lists the property at up to 800 people across two halls, with an indoor hall seating 200 and 400 floating.
Catering. Venuebookingz gives Rs 1,300 vegetarian and Rs 1,800 non-vegetarian per plate, and separately lists a menu range from Rs 450 to Rs 1,500. Those are not consistent either.
The practical response is not to average them. It is to put three questions in your first email to the property: how many rooms are available on my dates, what is the seated dinner capacity of each event space, and what is the current per-plate rate at my guest count for the menu I want. Every one of those has a single correct answer that only the property can give you. Anything you plan on a directory number is a plan built on sand, and this is the market where that failure is most expensive because there is no second venue to move to.

The building carries the aesthetic on its own, which means your decor budget buys refinement rather than construction, and in a market with a strict plastic ban and a heavy import cost on materials, that is worth real money.
It is also good at a two-part wedding: a small, formal ceremony in the heritage spaces and a larger reception on the lawn. The two halls plus outdoor space give you that without moving venues, which in Kodaikanal is a significant practical advantage.

The shape that works best at this property, and the one we would propose unless you tell us otherwise, uses the building for the intimate functions and the outdoor space for the large one.
Day one, morning. Guests arrive from Madurai having come up the previous evening. Late breakfast, nothing scheduled, because everyone has just done a ghat road. This is not a wasted half-day, it is the reason the rest of the schedule holds.
Day one, afternoon. Mehendi in the heritage interiors or on a terrace. Indoors is the right call here, because this is exactly when the mist arrives and because the building is the thing your photographer came for.
Day one, evening. Sangeet in the larger hall. Heating in winter, and confirm the amplified sound cut-off with the property, since Kodaikanal is a small town with residential neighbours and the Palani Hills protected areas nearby.
Day two, morning. Ceremony outdoors, early. This is the single most important scheduling decision at this property: morning light on the valley, before the cloud comes in. If your muhurtham falls in the afternoon, discuss a covered alternative at the time of booking rather than hoping.
Day two, evening. Reception, using both halls plus the lawn if the weather holds. This is the function that presses against the capacity question, and it is where the seated-versus-floating distinction matters most.
Compressing this into a single day is possible and we would advise against it. The travel time in and out of Kodaikanal is high enough that guests who came this far should get more than eight hours of wedding for it.
Season and the mist

The mist is the specific thing to plan around at this property. Kodaikanal’s cloud rolls in most afternoons year-round, typically from mid-afternoon onward. Getting there
Madurai airport is roughly 120 km and about three hours by ghat road. Coimbatore is roughly 175 km. Kodai Road railway station is about 80 km. Every approach climbs, and the roads are narrow, so confirm coach dimensions with your transport vendor against the specific route your fleet will take.
